9 Inch Rear
Help me understand what people mean when they say they have a big bearing 31 spline 9-inch rear axle vs small bearing? Is it about the size of the carrier bearing or are there also different sizes of wheel bearings for 31 spline axles? I thought I read something about there being different sized housing ends to support the differcne bearing sizes. If there are different versions, then how do you know what one you have?

My '81 has the 31 spline - and the only way I knew was to actually take everything apart and count them.
As far as big bearing/small bearing - I don't know. Our early bronco (69) has the smaller of the two, which is classified as a 2780# axle, compared to the stronger 3300# axle.

my 79 f100 had a 2.75 ratio with 28 spline axles with the axle seals in the housing. i swapped a 3.25 limited slip 31 spline into the 9 inch housing with the axle seals on the outside of the axle bearings. the difference between the two are the axle bearings.
