I have a manual 85 bronco II and it has a rebuilt 2.8 v-6 in it. Recently it has been acting up significantly. When I am accelerating, at around 25 mph the whole car starts shaking violently (this occurs only during acceleration). The shaking continues untill about 40 mph where it gives way to a loud, humming noise. Also, after around 20 minutes of driving, smoke can be seen seeping out of the hood when stopped (I cannot determine the exact location of the smoke, but it is coming out of the area in the middle of the engine, but it is coming from some where I can't see). It is not a lot of smoke, but it is enough to notice. I am going to take it to be serviced soon, but I was wondering if anyone who knows the broncII had any ideas. Thank you in advance.
the smoke could be caused by burning oil that could be leaking from the valve covers. the shaking might be caused by a pressure plate in the tranny that is going.
just to get to it you have to pull the transmission. i had been having some problems with my flywheel a while ago and i had to pull my tranny 4 times in 2 weeks, so i can do it with my eyes closed, but it isn't that tough as long as you have a second person to help. i don't know how much a shop would charge for this and i don't even remember how much the pressure plate is. i would just call your local auto parts and ask. good luck
