I have a 1946 Ford 1 1/2 ton dump and I would like to get a little more speed on the highway. Where can I find an Aux trans w/o to put behind my four speed transmission? I read about this, but I have never seen one and would like to know more about them.
Thanks
Joe
The only thing that comes to mind is a Brownie Box, IIRC they gave a direct and OD or direct and UD, they should be plentiful, many trucks (Chevy, Ford, Dodge, etc) had them installed.
Other option is to look for a two speed reared, we used to have a '53/'54 Ford 2 ton with electric two speed rear, also had a '46 Chevy 1.5ton with manual two speed rear.
Not sure of the exact ratios...but could be worth looking into.
Any idea where I can start looking for this box. I don't want to mess with the differential, I just don't want to be winding @ 3400 rpm just to get out of the way.
I'd try first checking with places that salvage large trucks.
Next would be to keep your eye open for 50's, '60's and 70's 1.5 ton and larger trucks that have been sitting in the same spot for a long time, I know the local farmers and such around here don't mind selling off a part or two on these big dead ones, since it would cost them to have them hauled off.
Depending on how much you want to spend, you can always check out Gear Vendors. They specialize in OD units. Their work is usually in '50's '60 stuff, but they may be able to help you out still. Check them out http://www.gearvendors.com/sitemap.html
Try US Gears; they have several overdrive and underdrive auxillary gearboxes they offer.
Their number is 1-800-874-3271. Their web address is www.usgear.com
Too, you might wish to check with Novak. Their number is 877-602-1500. Their web address is www.novak.adapt.com.
Good luck!
