I own a 2000 7.3 Excursion with approximately 150K miles. It has developed an oil leak and taken to the ford dealer 3 times for repairs and here is the history.
(1) First time I was told that my Air Cleaner was dirty (it was) to replace it and the leak will go away. Filter was replaced.
(2) about 3000 miles later again I took the truck back to the dealer for the same oil leak problem. This time they told me that they ran a dye and could not detect any leaks. They stated that it could have been oil that had collected on the belly from the previous time and it was working its way dry. They wanted $75.00 to clean the engine told them no and clean it myself and the leak seem to have gone away.
(3)About 2500 miles later again the oil leak is back. This time the dealer states that the air cleaner is dirty again thus creating the oil leak. this time they suggest that for $322.00 I replace the two lower turbo air hoses as they are worn and can not be tighten anymore and of course replace the air cleaner again.
I have my doubts that the Dealer is correct for a couple of reasons. Upon inspecting the air cleaner (paper element) it was found to be a oily therefore it collected a lot of dirt and made it appear clogged. Also approximately 5500 miles is too soon for the filter to go bad. when the truck was new I used to go 10000 to 12000 with no problems. When asked why the paper element was oily on the intake side of the filter they had no explanation other than it was normal road dirt. My driving habits or enviroment have not changed and my previous filters used to get dirty but not oily dirty. I thought that it could be a bad seal at the turbo but even that how could the oil get to the front of the air cleaner? Can anybody help?
