Question Which Amp?

From the replies on my previous post I have decided to get a 4 channel amp for my alpine speakers and head unit in my Ranger. The only thing i know about amps is their function, I don't know about options or features. What should I look for in a less expensive amp. I would prefer sound quality over wattage. If there are brands to stay away from or consider, I would love to know. Or if you think i don't need an amp please tell me so i can save 200 bucks. Thanks for your opinions.

Alpine door speakers? how many?

If you want clarity and higher volume output then you would want an amp.

Stay away from sony amps and subs, but they do make good head units. I have an alpine unit and happy with it. I am running two alpine type r 12's with a Phoenix gold 1200.1 running them. In the doors I have two type s alpine 6" 1/2's being pushed by another PG 300.1 2 channel amp. I am a very big supporter of Phoenix Gold.

If you want clean, undistorted power, you also need to spend a little money...

check out soundstorm amps. i am running a 4 channel on my mids and highs and they do not introduce any noise whatsover. and they are really cheap also. about sony, they used to make good head units, but anything with xplode on it sucks. simply put. avoid it at all costs.

JL stuff has great quality but is a little to the expensive side. You do get what you pay for though. I run JL 5x7s front and rear and 12w3v2 dual 6 ohm subs ina custom box. I have a JL 500/1 amp powering the subs and a 300/4 powering the doors. It sounds AWESOME!!!! Very clear and no distortion.

Since you plan on running just those speakers off the amp, I'd say you wouldn't want anything more than 60 watts RMS per channel. I'm running a Profile subwoofer amp. Some people say that it is a cheap brand. It is, but I have yet to have problems with it. As far as sound quality, it's only running one sub so I can't really tell if it's decreasing the sound quality at all. What I'm looking at for your case is the Profile AP740 amp. 60W X 4 channels. It claims to have a signal to noise ratio of 103dB (how clean the sound is) which is very good. ~$140. A $570 MTX amp has a level 110dB...really willing to fork over that extra money for a slightly better sound?

I'm not a fan of MTX, I do like PG thought, and Kicker has good stuff. I would also recomment Brutus amps, and Profile has some alright stuff, also US Amps, they're a little more on the expensive side, because most of their applications are custom made. Stay away from anything with Sony on it now days, they're gone cheap, also stay away from anything from Walmart
