just wondering, does anyone know where i can find 2 driveshaft loops for an 87 f-250? i just put a dynoed 500 hp smallblock in it, and i dont want to take any chances.am afraid to stand on it, for fear of breakin the shaft, and it is in 2 sections, so i am going to need 2 loops. thanks in advance for all the help!
Just buy a universal one from Summit and adapt it to your truck. I think bending some 1/2" rebar and welding metal plates/feet to the end of the rebar would work too.
As far as the hoop, the Summit suggestion was what I was thinking, I just couldn't remember and put Summit together with that question.
As far as armor for the gas tank, sometimes you can get plates made for 4x4's, or just a plate between it and the shaft, or both if you're inclined.
It's a real long shot to break the front u joint, but shafts to twist off sometimes.
I read a story about 3 cons chained in an Econoline down south being transferred somewhere. Drive shaft or u joint let go, gas tank went up. The driver got out, but them 3 guys got the death penalty.
The only reason you see a story like that is that it hardly ever happens and so it's "news".
Like I said, it's a real long shot, but you won't like it if it happens on your truck.
If you have a few basic tools you could build them yourself and save some money. Have you thought about upgrading you drive shaft before something breaks? If you get a chance check out High Angle Driveline. When I was in Portland visiting with Proeliator I go to see the new drive shaft that he got from High Angle. He desintegrated his old shaft but with the new High Angle one he can drop the clutch on a 600 horse engine with no problems. And it's running a pretty steep angle at the joint too (22 degrees if I remember right). That thing is BEEFY. I know they're not cheap but they're virtually indestructable and will not only save damage but will also save you being stranded somewhere.
preciate all the help, i will have to look at the site you suggested, and see what they have to say, but wether i get the new shafts or not, i am still goin to get the loops just for added insurance. the only thing that i dont have is a welder, have drill press, and grinder and things of that nature, but not any thing to weld with, cept the acetalen(sp).
