Question stearing problem

I have an 03 x, just got back from dealer and they said that the gear box was bad. Well thats fine but, Im not sure they ajusted the worm gear all the way or correctly.
They losend the lock nut and then turned the set screw in about a 1/4 of a turn clockwise. That made no noticable difference. So they said gear box was bad!
Now im not trying to say they didnt do a good job but, shouldnt they have tried to ajust it a bit more ? And is clockwise the correct dirrection to tighten the play in the stearing wheel ?
Could someone please tell me what they know about this?
Thanks X 03 Jeff

CW is the correct rotation to adjust backlash out of the box.
I am not sure how many turns you can go on that box before you are out of the limits

Jeff,

Do you have Acrobat Reader? I can send you the procedure in .pdf. Did they disconnect the steering sector shaft arm drag link first? It is an involved procedure.

Me too! Mine is sloppy and I'd adjust if I knew how.

Sorry to piggy back off your thread but I have a couple of questions about steering on my 04 F250 4x4.

I notice when turning the wheel several turns while stopped or going very slow during parking I hear a noise, the noise sounds like a squeak only not as high pitched. is this just the stearing stabilizer??

My truck only has 800 miles on it, is this normal?

Can you please post the file so we can all view the procedure?
Seems like the SD is prone to steering slop.
Thanks.

Sorry it took me so long to get back.
Yes I do have acrobat reader, and no they didnt take anything apart except for the air filter assy, to get to the adjustment screw on top of the steering box.
Yeah if you could please send me that, not only will I learn. I will show it to them before they put in a new steering box in.
Thanks, X03 Jeff

Duke, Im not worried about the piggy back. Im not sure if that is normal or not, I have never had that problem on this X , but it almost sounds like a power steering noise.
Take it to the dealer and see what they say, and please let me know.

I got one for ya, if i make a hard right turn, only close to hard over, and more so up an incline as I turn back to just left of center it locks up,I can push it through but if I have room to move it back to the right a Bit no resistance ?? This for 15K Getting ready to take her in for a small list of warrenty stuff, But Im sure they will squak about my 3.5" lift.

I just got mine back from having the gearbox replaced. Only lasting problem is my steering wheel is not centered up like it was when I bought it. (can't complain, steering is much nicer now.)

Does anyone know if the procedure has been posted any where for the adjustment on the gear box ? Or does someone else have it ?
Im do to go back to the dealer tomarrow, and would like to have this in hand if possible.

Jeff
