I just bought a 1995 f-150 w/5.8L engine, and they guy said that when he started it after sitting a couple months the engine had lost power. It seems like it had fairly good low end power but as soon as it hits 2000 rpms it wont hardly accelerate. In fact it wont even get up to 55 if i step on the gas a considerable amount; however, if i ease up on the pedal and let it shift into overdrive and let the rpms drop it will accelerate faster. The guy i bough it from said it is most likely the Throttle Posisition Sensor. Does this sound like a good explanation? Any suggestions would be great before i put money into it, or bring it to the shop. Thanks
drop by an auto parts store and ask them to pull the codes . its free. the gas could be bad, the catylitic converter could be clogged and robbing power. it might need a tune up. there are a lot of possibilites. i would try the basics first before replacing parts. tune up would be my first start . using basic copper plugs, some ford 9mm wires and new cap/rotor. maybe check timing is at 10*btdc. then see how it behavies. if nothing improves move to the next culprit (exhaust)
I replaced the cap and rotor, neatened up the plug wires, checked all connections, checked the air filter, tank has fresh gas in it. I'm not sure what else to check besides fuel filter, fuel pressure, and codes. I'm almost positive it has to be a sensor. Another thing i noticed is that if i punch the gas right to the floor you can hear it suck air in like it should but the engine will rapidly drop in rpms. For example, when going down the road around 30mph i can puch the gas, the tranny will downshift, and the engine will rev to a higher rpm like it should and bog down... then i loose all power and loose speed. I'm bringing it into the ford garage friday to get a diagnosis, but if anyone has any suggestions i can try before then i will definately take advantage of them. Thanks for any help.
Nooooooo, not ford. man you can find a better shop then that to work on your truck. your gonna get reamed on cost. fuel filter could also be , and is easy and cheap to replace yourself. do you own a haynes manual? if not get one and start working on your truck it will save ya lots of cash.
I know the service manager at the ford dealer and they always give us good deals. usually well under the actual amount of time they spend on the vehicle. $30 is what they quoted me for diagnosis, and im sure if i paid the part they would throw it on for free. I do have a haynes manual but never thought to look in the troubleshooting section... i'll do that.
