I must be using the wrong keywords here.
I'm not finding many articles on what I need. Links would help, if someone has 'em.
I want to convert my '79 400 to a throttle body setup, and my next piece that I need to get is the throttle body.
Most people seem to agree that a GM throttle body is the way to go, but what type do I need?
Are there " jets" in these things that I can change out, or do I need to try to find one that's off of an engine of about the same size as mine?
If I need to find an engine that's about the same size as mine, is it better to go a little bigger, rather than a little smaller? Like off of a 454 rather than 350.
Anyone got hints on how to ID a Chevy engine in a junk yard? I'm thinking they MUST make a fulie engine that's between 454 and 350.
Better yet, are there any Ford throttle bodies that'll bolt onto my Weiand intake?
Flame on, 'cause I know this must have been covered here.
The only Ford CFI throttle bodies you will find are on 302's in Crown Vics, from about 82 to 85. They flow about 400cfm, so it will be a little small, but they have a Holley 2BBL bolt pattern. GM TBI setups were used on anything from four cylinders, right up to the 502, and from about 83 to the mid-90's. As far as ID, GM big blocks have evenly spaced exhaust ports, while the small blocks have the two center port right close together. Most big blocks you will find are 454's, but I believe the 502s used the same throttle body. The best one to use would be off of a mid-90's van or pickup. If you come across a school bus, rv, or 3500 pickup, it will most likely have exactly what you are looking for. The GM throttle body has a weird 3-bolt pattern, but there is an adaptor available from Painless Wiring.
