About the comment that Dale Jr said in Victory lane yesterday Should he be Fined Penalized Points or Both or None
No Delay? Dale Jr. should had said 'poop': been asked by readers if Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be fine/penalized for his on-air curse during his post-race-win interview at Talladega on NBC. That is up to NASCAR, but here are a few tidbits found accross the Internet on the situation: 1) During the interview in Victory Lane with NBC's Matt Yocum, Earnhardt Jr. was asked what it meant to win for the fifth time at Talladega. Earnhardt Jr. replied, "It don't mean s--- right now. Daddy's won here 10 times." NBC later issued an apology for the inappropriate language. After several media requests, NASCAR is reviewing the post-race videotape, according to spokesman Mike Zizzo. Any penalty would be handed down Tuesday at the earliest, Zizzo said.(NASCAR.com) 2) ......off-color words he uttered on NBC during a postrace interview, which NASCAR is reviewing before deciding any disciplinary action. Earlier this season Johnny Sauter and Ron Hornaday Jr. each were fined $10,000 and docked 25 championship points for talking 'dirty' [using the same word...but in anger] during Busch Series broadcasts. If precedence holds, Earnhardt could go from 13 points ahead of second-place Kurt Busch to 12 points down with seven races left in the Chase for the Nextel Cup. "If anybody was offended by that, I can't imagine why they'd tune in to a race in the first place," Earnhardt said, later joking that he needed some Dale Carnegie classes. "There were a lot of hand gestures going on through the race, and that was weak compared to what you go through on the racetrack. But I hope they understand it was in jubilation. ... When you're happy and joyous about something, it's different from being angry and cursing in anger."(USA Today) 3) Asked about the matter, NASCAR vp/communications Jim Hunter said, "We're looking into it," adding that a decision would be made by Monday or Tuesday. Earnhardt seemed strangely subdued after the race, apparently aware that his slip of the tongue could prove to be costly. "I'm worried about losing the points lead, because I don't know what kind of deal will come out of it," he said. "If you guys [press] push the issue, in three or four days it could be a big problem. I just hope everybody understands it came out of jubilation."(Speed Channel)(10-4-2004)
NASCAR dug their own hole here. earlier this year they fined 2 busch series drivers $10,000 and 25 points. I feel they should do the same to Earnhardt just to be consistent. If if costs him the championship,oh well,it was his choice of words.
I'm a Jr. fan, but I suppose do whats fair, if they fined others, fine him too. I'm not really sure if they should fine people for that though. It slips once ina while. If they are on the TV and go off on some tangent where they swear in every sentence, then yes they should get penalized for that.
It would be funny if they started using exclamations such as "oh, body waste" or "holy excrement" or "osculate my posteriority". If they are really worried about lauguage, use a delay to bleep out the offending words and let the man talk.
Dono
I suppose considerign his responsibility (to his sponsor's and company) he should mind his tongue when on national tv, and I can see how NASCAR kinda HAS to sting him, but.... Along with what Big Orn said, he made a mistake, but what about the networks that produce material that's FAR more rowdy than that EVERY night, in primetime?
Well, he should have choosen his words more carefully and NASCAR had already set a precedent w/ Hornaday and I forget the other one. Going to be a shame if he loses the championship by less than 25 pts though. Unless it's to Stewart or Martin.
I'm really a Smoke fan, but it would be nice to see Martin win it considering he's only going to be in another yr or 2. He's probably the best driver not to win the championship yet.
I think it was a joke that Jr. got what he got. I love NASCAR racing but it is getting so retarded with all the rules. Pretty soon it is going to get as bad as watching wrestling (don't mean to offend wrestling fans). I'm not a Jr fan and if it were any other driver I would have the same view. NASCAR builds this chase up for the fans and when any driver shows alittle emotion they fine em or warn em. Hornaday and Sauter's comments were totally different in that they were out the anger. So what if he (Jr) swore, out of all the bad words he could of said that one wasn't the worst one to say.
I know I have said worse but on the other hand: Now don't think I'm some over sensitive liberal or anything. In fact I wish they would be more aggresive at times, ie: an intentional in the wall deserves a good butt kickin'.
Anytime you are in a position where people look up to you, you shoudl be held to a higher standard of discipline. True network TV does allow much worse, so do like I do and don't watch TV that much. I think NASCAR did the right thing by doing what they did, they have a set discipline that says you do not __________ and that is the rule. Look at the major League baseball, football and especially, basketball and I'll ask two simple questions. 1). Would you rather your kids model after professional athletes or NASCAR drivers? 2). Do you want NASCAR drivers acting like many of the goofball athletes we have running around on TV or more often in court or drug rehab?
Well when your in the public spotlight like these guys you have to be careful what you say. Whatever the rules say it should applyto him as well as anybody else. Should make no differense if hes at the bottom of the rankings or top. Everybody knows the rules.
