This is a very common question. Do a search and you will find lots of info.
You do need a special disconnect tool, you can get that at autozone and don't forget to relieve the pressure in the fuel lines.
Special tool.......relieve fuel pressure......all the correct things to do, i agree.
Now here's how i do it:
-Get yourself a pan to catch some raw fuel and a couple rags
-get your needle nose pliers
-screw driver
-i have the disconnect tool that is useless in my opinion
Take your needle nose pliers and pull the white plastic clips out.
The fuel line will separate from the filter ends if you pull at them with a little pressure. Be ready to catch some gasoline from the open lines and also from the filter itself. No big deal, just don't be smoking and keep your trouble light a safe distance from the raw fuel. You do not need any fires.
Install by pushing the fuel lines back onto the filter making sure you have the "filter fuel flow direction" going the correct way. Insert the new plastic clips making sure that their legs are seated into their slots. Tighten any clamps or covers that you removed to access the filter.
Start engine and check for leaks. Takes all of 10-15 minutes start to finish. I use the same procedure on my F150, ranger, sable, cougar and grand marquis.
good luck
I want to do the same on my 2000 F150 4.2L. What I don't get is how do you remove the clips on either end of the filter line just before they get to the filter?
Thanks
I have the tool. What I don't understand is how to remove the metal end clips on the fuel line. They are located at the end of the fuel line just before the line connects to the filter.
Thanks
Those clips just pull right off, you should be able to do it with your hand easily. Once they are unhooked, you can slide them down the fuel line and out of the way. I strongly advise you have the tool handy, i dont know anyone that can get the filter unhooked without it. The lines are spring loaded from the inside, and you will not be able to get them undone without the tool. This whole project should take you no longer than 15 minutes.
