What is the difference between the heavy duty and the standard alternator in a 92 F150?
The reason I ask is I bought a voltager regulator for my truck and it turns out the regulator is for the Heavy duty and not the standard alternator. I have since gone and bought the standard one, but haven't had time to install it.
I am not driving the truck right now so it hasn't been run with the HD voltage regulator but would it hurt the alternator if I ran it with the HD regulator?
I did some checking to try to ensure I did not tell you something incorrect. For your 92 F150, Ford offered two alternators: one rated @ 75 amps and one rated @ 80amps. The material I saw showed both units as taking the same wiring harness and same voltage regulators.
Obviously, the 80-amp unit has more capacity, but not grossly so.
I did, however, find a listing for a 100-amp alternator used in XLT Lariats as a special order option. It does, of course, take a different wiring harness and voltage regulator.
If you can post the part numbers of the two voltage regulators, I will be glad to try to sort them out for you, with corresponding Ford numbers.

Thanks for the help, I just broke down and took the alternator out (had to cut a bolt due to an oversized radiator on my part) and took it to the parts store and got the correct rebuild kit for it.

Good luck on your rebuild! If you please, post what happens after you reinstall the rebuilt alternator. I really do hope your problem will be rectified!
