Question Pulling Doubles?

I've seen it a few times, never condoned it with what I saw pulling it. BUT, there comes a situation for everything. I usually pull a 32'6"(box) horse trailer, and I want to take my new JD HPX gator on a trail ride. I'd need to pull the gator b/h the horse trailer. What is the best recommendation as far as mounting reese hitch under the back of the horsetrailer or thumbs up/down advise? I've got the 350 c/c w/ 4.10's and a Diablo race chip but I wouldn't drive as fast as I normally do either. R/T would be about 300 miles. I know a few that tow golf carts behind a horse trailer but this gator weighs 1260lbs, and we don't need to say what my GVW would be.. Thanks for a tip or advise in advance

You didn't say what state you are in, but the laws vary from state to state on what you are required to do/have to tow doubles.

In California, I believe you need a Class A non-commercial liscense with doubles endorsement, if the doubles combination is not used for hauling cargo for hire, and the first trailer must be a fifth wheel (or possibly gooseneck), not a pull-behind (bumper).

I'm assuming your horse trailer is a gooseneck and that's why you're not putting the ATV in the truck bed?

Best thing you can do is head down to your local motor vehicle dept and read up on the legal specifics of pulling doubles in your state and go from there. And yeah, you DO need to be concerned with what your GrossCombinedVehicleWeight (total weight of the combination) will be...

If you have a '99-up F350 with PSD, the GCWR is 20,000 lbs.

i pull a 22' tandem axle travel trailer with a 14' light weight tandem axle atv trailer behind (with two atvs on it)the atvs weigh about 900 pounds total. i highly recommend using sway control systems on both trailers. i use a eq on the travel trailer and a reese sway control on the atv trailer. i measure out at 65.5 feet with my 95' f350 lb. i live in utah and am 6" over length, currently i am building a 1' shorter trailer. with all that length i have no sway at all. the amount of sway definitly depends on how you load the second trailer and your sway control. i had to load mine several differant times to get it not to sway. now i can do it every time without problems. as for the hitch on the rear i recommend getting one custom built by a shop that has done lots of them. i dont know about making a reese fit it. i recommend towing doubles only when done safely. proper equipment and being smart about it are a must.

Thanks... I'm in GA. I still haven't decided to do this just yet. I don't even have a trailer borrowed yet for the "JD Gator", but I'm sure it would have to be at least a 6'x10'. the Horse trailer is 40'6" Nose to Tail, so I'm positive I'll be overlength, ahhh... I've just about talked myself out of going. I'd be running down about 25k gvw. My only other driver is a quadriplegic, and she hasn't driven that far yet to use 2 vehicles.
