[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Mar-02 AT 01:25 PM (EST)]My wife, her parents and I have made a habit of flying to Europe once a year for vacation. During the months of February, March, April, May and sometimes June, airline tickets are fairly inexpensive. Our rule-of-thumb we use is don't buy tickets over $500.00. We normally spend between $350 and $450 for round-trip tickets. A few have been had for under $300.00
Last year we went to Canada instead of Europe (for a variety of reasons). What a beautiful place! We went to Halifax Nova Scotia. Because my in-laws were building a new home, my [pregnant] wife and I went alone. This year the in-laws are ready to travel again and we are going back to Halifax... with our 6-month-year-old son. (Did I say how many beautiful and interesting places there are to see in NS?)
How do we decide where to go? This year a few other factors came into play because of our new son... but traditionally, price dictactes where we go. We just start pricing places in Europe and Canada and see where the deals are. The Internet is a wonderful tool! For those that like to travel, you should really look into this. We also have the mindset that during the months I mentioned above, we might find a deal and go on a moments notice. This really makes it fun!
There are many, many options for lodging. From dirt-cheap to what you would expect to pay in the U.S.
Here are places that my family has gone (all for under $500.00):
London (multiple times)
Ireland
France (Paris)
Greece
Egypt
Germany
Austria
Canada
Oh yeah, I almost forgot to say I am from the St. Louis, MO area (Illinois side of the river).
I tow my 22' Penn Yan with my 4x4 E350 to the Ausable river in Northern, Mi. They have rustic camping along the river banks only accessable by boat. Very relaxing and fun.
I seem to vacation a lot. Being self-employed lends itself to a bit of freedom.
I take my family on a big, road-trip vacation once a year (10-14 days). Always stopping in SC to visit my parents but choose a new section of the country to expose them to. We're headin' deep south this year! Next year we're driving to Seattle to see more family.
Every other year we fly to Hawaii to visit family and friends! Can only do it every other year because I have to buy 6 tickets!
We do spend a lot of time in Maine and New Hampshire, too. (weekenders and the sort...)
Starting in April we hit every race track on the east coast from here (NY) to Florida, part of the business, BUT next week, Im outta here, west coast bound. Visit all my friends from Sandiego to Longbeach.
3weeks of purely "leagal activities". Some Snowboarding in Mammouth to a little boat trip to Catalina. I save all my energy for Longbeach..not so leagal things there!! God I'm gald I'm divorced!!!:-staun
my whole family parents and sister go for 3-4 weeks during july or aguest and we pack the rv and take the pets and go to some part of canada we're never been to before
Every June the wifes family takes a week to ten days off and we go to Canada and go FISHING! I love to fish! In the summer I go fishing at least once every week. We are lucky enough to have a lot of good fishing lakes within a 20 mile radius of where we live.
Being self-employed in the Trucking Industry(Owner/Operator,small fleet),
I find myself................AT WORK. My drivers have wonderful vacations while I WORK.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Mar-02 AT 11:05 AM (EST)]Vacation? What's that? My idea of a vacation - stay at home and work on the house or truck. Wife's idea - go to Mexico and lay in the sun. In reality, we spend most weekends boating at the lake cottage in West Bend, WI. or going to horse shows and watchnig my daughter win.
This year we're going to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto with the whole dang 4H group.
