I would definetily recommend the Hypertech Power Programmer. I have programmed my '99 F-350 7.3L Diesel and saw an extreme difference in power, torque and gas mileage. I prefer the programmer because all you have do is plug it in and you can de-program the computer in about 5 min. if you need to take the truck in for service. The programmer also gives you options like adjusting the tranmission. I actually bought my programmer on ebay for $150.00, but I warn you about that make sure you ask seller questions like exactly what model it is, if they de-programmed the vehicle that they used it on, ect.
Depends on what you want to do with the truck. If you are gonna stay pretty much stock ( exhaust, intake, and other minor mods ) then a programmer will probably make you very happy. If you plan on going after big horsepower numbers then a flip chip would probably be the wiser choice. You can have it burned for the mods you have now and then when you add injectors or a big turbo or even a dual HPOP the chip can be reburned to take full advantage of these mods. If you decide to go with a programmer, I have never met anyone who didn't like thier Edge Evolution.
The aftermarket place that I shop at swears by the evolution programmer. Remember, the ability to read fault codes are priceless.(Just go to the dealer for a scan once) However, I have a buddy at the local Ford dealer that says the Hypertech is amazing as well. I personally am getting the Evolution.
ive got the bullydog 4 pos chip i love it switch on the fly when a dookiemax pulls up next to ya. if i was gonna get a programmer i would get the edge evoloution its nice that you can pull codes with it. but to change programs you have to shut the truck down, i know too many people that have had problems with the superchips. bullydog also tailors your chip to what you want and if you have a manual or auto tow or no towing or just tons of horsepower. you can do all that with the edge and customize your programs but that experimenting can get pricey, i went with the bullydog cause they made all the mistakes i dont have too
I have an edge and swear by it. A new feature with the latest software update allows you to monitor Engine oil temp, Trans oil temp, trans line pressure, and exhaust b/p, all in real time, or to freeze an instant "image". The 0-60 and 1/4 mile timers are an excellent feature as well, and as accurate as your speedometer, that I verified at the strip. Switching on the fly, for me is not an issue. I leave mine in EXTREME mode all the time. The new revision eases the off idle throttle response to make the extreme mode very easy to live with on a daily basis. Heck, I even tow in extreme mode.
