I mentioned this earlier in another thread but figured itd get more attention here I just noticed two smallish dents in my tailgate that wernt there 2 weeks ago when i bought it. The dents are in the exact same spot 17'' in and 14'' up, also i took that top plate off and looked inside and theirs a reinforcement bar that runs directly in fornt of the dents. Has anyone seen or heard of this before? Im taking it in for the 1st oil change tommorrow and am gonna take it up with the dealer to see about getting it fixed.
The reinforcement is called a strainer. It is used to stop the outer panel from fluttering/vibrating and oil-canning in if it were pushed against. Are the dents going into the metal or out of the metal?
If so theyve got excellent aim to get it in the same spot on each side also it looks like they may be growing, noticed today they looked somewhat bigger.
There is a 3 mm gap between the strainer and the outer panel and there are daubs of mastic on the rear flange about every 100mm. It would take quite a force to overcome the mastic and move the outer beyond 3mm to make the dent. It is hard to say without seeing it. The dimensions you gave are actually 8 mm above the strainer.
Curious.... Did you have a spray-in bedliner done? I have a 2004screw and Line-x did mine. When they unfastened the cables to remove the tailgate.... they dropped the gate against the bumper. Result... (2) small dents.
I dont have dents in my tailgate, but the paint is chippin off. All over my tailgate, there are little pin-head sized chips out of my paint. Looks like silver pepper has been sprikled on my tailgate. Dont know how I could have done this my self. Havent mowed my yard around it. Anyone else had paint chip off tailgate?

Did you happen to drive with the tailgate down? If so, that may have caused it.
No I havent driven with the tailgate down except after the dents were already there, also i know its not from a trailer because i havent towed any trailer, ill check tommorrow morning see if the dents line up with where the bumper would be if it dropped.
As far as I know, everyone removes the tailgate when spraying in a liner. There was no question as to how the dents in my tailgate occured. I had 200 miles on my truck! The guys that did mine 'fessed up and paid to have a paintless dent repair guy massage 'em out. Amazingly, you have to look very hard to see anything now. I didn't take any phtos to show you. My dents aligned perfectly with the corners of my bumper at the license plate drop. Goodluck guy.
There is also a lower strainer in the tailgate (edge is 7" up and 21" in). I was told if you push real hard just outside of the strainer, you might get some read through. The same may hold true with the upper strainer.
I used my kneee to lift up the tailgate, ( my hands were full) and put a small dent to the left of the handle. I know I did this before on my old trucks and no dents. I wonder if the the lighter tailgate has anything to do with it???????
