Running Boards / Bars

I want to add running boards / bars to my 2005 scab, and I am undecided for a number of reasons, and who better to help but the veteran members of this forum!

I think I would prefer the black, non-shiny OEM boards from Ford, but they are twice the price of boards by Westin, Bully, etc.

That being said, the less expensive options I'm considering involve powder-coated black, or a combination of stainless steel and chrome. I don't want the bars to stand out too much (hence my leaning toward the OEM bars), but I'm not sure they will. My truck is Arizona Beige, and there is chrome trim, but there are also black accents as well.

Could anyone provide Gallery pictures I could look at - especially if their truck is Arizona Beige? How about good or bad experiences with the OEM or aftermarket bars?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

When I bought my Lariat it came with the black plastic ones. I hate running boards and if you would have posted this 6 weeks ago I would have unbolted them and mailed to you for the shipping... But... they are growing on me. I'm 6' 4" and never had a truck with RB's and once I got myself to use them instead of letting my leg just slide over them getting out of the truck they do come in handy. My wife dealing with post polio syndrome is the only reason I didn't take them off when I bought the truck in July. I don't know about aftermarket RB's, but the Ford black plastic ones are soild as a rock and they stick out just far enough to keep the Japaneese go cart doors off my paint in parking lots..

I'd bite the bullet and buy them from Ford if you are going to put them on there.

One thing about them. I was out on the beach the other day now that the tourist's have left the shore area. When I got home there must have been 5lbs of sand on each one. No big deal and easy enough to hose off or brush off...

I hated them too when they came with my wife's Escape. To this day I crack my ankle on them, mostly because the vehicle is too low for running boards. They are the black plastic OEM ones, but she won't let me take them off, even if they would fit my truck.

I'm swaying to the Ford OEM boards at this point.

Thanks for your opinion - I appreciate it. My best to your wife, also.

I just installed the Ford Accessories plastic running boards on mine the other week and like Dunk said. They are solid as a rock. They dont stick out as far as the tubular bars do so I like that better. They install in less than twenty minutes with no drilling or modifying involved.

Howdy,

I just installed a set of Westin Nerf bars on my 04 Super Cab F-150 and absolutely love them.

The are an easy bolt on item. My wife can get in the truck much, much easier.

For what they do, they are pretty inexpensive.

I bought my black powder coated, standard steel bars on the internet for around $201 delivered to my front door.

The difference between running boards and nerf bars is a personal thing, each has advantages/disadvantages - get what you like best.

Running boards

I have an 04 SCREW. I have the Ford chrome one's. They look great. Black and plastic just don't look near as good as the chrome one's.
Good luck.

bar clearance

My workboots won't fit on my aftermarket bars (made by Willmore), because they mount too close to the cab ('04 Supercab 4WD). There's less than 2" clearance. I wish they mounted lower so I didn't kick the cab every time I step on them. Ask about this before you make the purchase.
