just picked up a '78 F250 4x4 for plowing. got a few questions about the transfer case. it looks like a New Process unit. the stick goes from front to back lock-lo-n-hi-lock. i'm told this is a full time t-case (NP 203?). what does full time mean? also, i cant find low range anywhere. you push the stick forward, you're in 2 wd, the rear tires spin when you gun it. pull the stick back, you're in 4wd. no sign of low range or of neutral.
i'm a newbie to the 70's fords, can you help me out?
Full time is where you don't have to get out and engage the front hub's. Lo lock is all the way to the front, pushing on the stick forward. Neutral is in the middle. Never try to go into Lo range while the vehicle is in motion, it is best to go to Lo range sitting still while the trans is in neutral. You can go directly to four Hi while driving down the road. Does it have a hub selector on the front axle or is it a shinny silver cap?
Your lock outs aren't always a good way to tell if it full time or part time.I've seen people buy the conversion kit an only put the lock outs on, Cause they did'nt know how to put the gear in the transfer to convert it from full to part time.
yes it has lockouts on the front hubs. the transfer case lever only has 2 positions, pushed forward (2wd) and pulled back (4wd). the stick handle says there should be a lo and a hi. i dont know if there is something wrong with the linkage or if the t-case is operating as it should.
There is definetly a lo lock position and a neutral position. On the passenger side of the t-case there is a side cover, on 2 of the bolt's that hold the cover on there is a metal ID plate, at least there should be. You will be able to determine the type of transfer case from there. It has probably not been used in a very long time that would be why you cannot get lo or neutral position.
bhawkin, you are correct. If he would of came back and said he had shinny silver cap's it would of been a no brainer tho.
I've kinda got the same problem. The lock light comes on, so I think the T-Case is engaging ok. But my front tires won't spin when I hammer down. The front driveline spins. I don't know if its the t-case or the front axle.
T-Case gotta look but its a full time in a 78 F250 to a dana 44 front.
If the front shaft is turning its not the T-case.Check to make sure you blow out your lock outs.If they are ok pull the front cover off your front diff and see if you see the problem.
Ya, my 78 has a light that lights up lock when in the high and low lock postition. But my front axle doesn't appear to be locking. I don't have lockable hubs does anyone think the hubs are bad. If I had pieces of spider gear floating around, you would think it would jam up the front axle from time to time. I guess I just need to open up the front diff and take a look.
