I have been experiencing a strange vibrating like sound emitting from under my 00' Explorer. This vibrating sound seems to be loudest when the truck is in idle mode. Could this be my exhaust system going bad? Current Mileage-61000+. I've owned this vehicle since Aug 00', mileage when purchased 51000+. My explorer has the 4.0 SOHC engine. This sound has been heard with both the A/C on and off, so I don't think it's the a/c compressor. This issue is brand new.
Secondly, What type of steering setup is my truck running? I've heard Rack&Pinnion(sp) and regular truck steering-ty rods ? Confused. The reason for this question is because I can hear what sounds like a popping sound when the steering wheel is turning with the truck in slow motion.
Please bear with me I'm not mechanically Inclined.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Need more Info let me know.

I just bought a 97' SOHC and have noticed a weird 'off and on' vibration from the motor at idle. I just chalked it up to the way the SOHC ran but since my truck is like brand new I wasn't too concerned about it. If its like mine, its a weird thing though, it'll just be idling and then vibrate then stop and then vibrate (like it comes in waves) but as soon as I step on the gas it goes away. Has anyone else had a issue with this or is it normal? I'm still much happy with my X so far, drives great and love the extra room.
Had the same problem with my 99... here's what I found..... several of the heat shields on the exhaust had broken welds. Easy fix for that... just rip them off. The second thing that I found was the heat shield on the tranny. I didn't put it back properly the last time I did a tranny service, so it was rattling occasionally at idle. So I climbed back under and managed to get it back into position.... not the easiest thing to do, but not impossible. Check those things out and see what you find.
