Hi everyone, yes I am a newbie here, but I drove my first psd today and liked it fine. The question I have is what build date on the engine should I avoid? I am sure this has been covered before but I cant find it that clearly when I performed a search. Any help would be great, and thank's in advance. I also have read awfull gas mileage regarding the psd does this coraspond with the same build date that I am inquireing about?
It is not the issue really on build dates of the truck, many pre May 03 trucks on the engine build date had the first design injectors that failed from a side load to the injector pin. Many are still running with no problems and the new injectors should have been out of the main stream of parts by late May of 03.
Fuel milage is not an issue, it is how you drive. I pull a trailer with a gas truck that gets 8 mpg and passes everything but a gas station. My PSD pulling a loaded trailer....not often....gets 12mpg. I actually drive the PSD as a personal vehicle and average 16 city and home.....Highway miles to 19....with the Predator in 100Hp mode....hehehe...who cares...
The engine build date is on the drivers side valve cover.....if you look just right......you will see it.
My oasis report says build date 3/13/03. I've looked at the engine sticker but cannot recall what it says--and don't feel like going out there at the moment, still working on coffee and prying eyes open. Oasis also says I had the 11/03 flash (all this before I purchased used in May '04). No troubles with engine or performance. I get 17.5 mpg mixed and 21 highway. This is a 4x4 CC Lariat PSD. I cannot imagine getting another gasser.
01/23/03 Engine build date with 39,128 miles. I updated to the July 04 flash at about 33,500 miles. This truck runs absolutely fantastic! As a regular user of Power Service (grey bottle) the truck puts out very little black smoke even under hard acceleration
Mileage is about the same as most others report 15-16 mpg combined and 17-18.5 highway (Best was 20.2). In the West, highway speeds are 80-85 mph which is a bit high for the most efficient fuel mileage. From my experience, 70 mph is the best speed for optimum mpg. If I went 70 on the freeway here, Grandma would pass me!
