Drug Testing ?? Any Lab Techs ??

I will first start off with saying this doesn't have anything to do with me. I have worked either for , around, or subcontracted for the Goverment since 1986 and have always been tested and of course passed. My questions are how long after you do drugs in general can you pass a test whether it is a urine, hair, or mouth swab. I have worked around people who I personally know that use drugs daily yet they continually pass. I took a safety class with about 15 individuals that were under 21 years olds and half passed / about half didn't, yet they all were talking about ,"how could he have passed when he did it with us",etc., My purpose is not to report anyone as I am not even around them any longer / nor care - I just don't get how a test would catch only about 50%. I will state when I said ,"I don't care", this class had nothing to do with the government- nor any actual job- just a part of a safety test training. Is anyone on this forum a lab tech or other that might have knowledge in this? All I had for advice to these guys was good luck finding a job that doesn't require you to be tested and pass.

50% Pass

As for personel in the military, only half of the actual tests are counted and tested. Due to the high cost of testing, not every test will be counted. Being a medic I am able to see plenty of people pass through the cracks and continue to stay in the military even after drug use. There is no real mistery or way out of not getting caught other than just not doing the drugs that are being tested. Not knowing which drugs will be tested, I guess that leaves nothing. There is a 5-10% rate that can be in the blood for some drugs due to perscription drugs. Most of the time its like you said, Some are just lucky, but dont worry, they all get caught in the end.

I was wondering,. Actually, I think that gave those guys a false sense or reality. LIke I told them , " you will be lucky to find a job these days that doesn't test." I guess after they fail a time or two then reality will kick in.

I have had only one job that did that on a regular basis, DOT stuff. One other was a pre job screening.

DOT and Gov. Agencies have set limit levels. Some other agencies and employers have their individual set levels and they may be high! Other people that "pass" the test may have used the substance is a reasonable time and the levels are below the set point (even for the government)! This is for urine, blood, or mouth swabs but hair grows about 1 inch/month. So if your hair is 2 inches long, they can get an accurate level up to 2 months. Longer hair would let them test a longer period of time.

Hair test-very difficult to fool, but expensive.

saliva test-not very accurate (lots of false negatives), but cheap.

urine test-w/ certain common "drugs" there is a substance you can take to fool the standard tests (the ones in the doctors office say), but it's not very wide-spread knowledge. Fairly cheap tests. The ones at the big labs (mainly used for questionable specimins) are very accurate at inspecting. Expensive.

Detection times vary w/ the metabolism in question, and the "quality" of the specimen. it also varies widely w/ the drug involved.

This being a family site, I'll leave it at that. And if you're wondering, I wrote a paper on the subject .
