Has anybody had to be on disability, either temporarily or permanently? I tried to start a new career as a local truck driver. I had gotten a job delivering steel, and had to wear steel toed shoes. The shoes gave me three blisters on my toes, so I went to the Dr. As I am a diabetic, he immediately put me on insulin. I had been just taking pills. According to the D.O.T., since I had not been driving for three years previously before being put on insulin, I had to give up my job and my CDL. Now I have been told that since being on insulin keeps me from doing the job I was trained to do, then I can get on disability. I figure, if it pays some bills, and tuition for me to go to school and learn something else, then I might try it, at least for a while. I was just wondering if anybody had any experience with the system, and can offer any advice. Thanks.
If you don't have any supplemental insurance such as aflac, then the only recourse for disability is social security. I haven't drawn SS, but I have drawn temp. disability on aflac, and they paid very well. You have to have good doctor documentation.
be prepared for a long wait on disability, my wife was kicked in the back by a slacked jawed drunk redneck in the emergency room 5 years ago, was just awarded a settlement 10 days ago, went to the disability office and was told the wait was 16 months, and she is still working, granted shes not running down the halls going to stat calls, but she did accept a house supervisors position which still requires hustle. i keep trying to get her to quit but she wants to wait on the disability process to go through. just be prepared for a long wait. they like to drag their feet. good thing she was awarded lifetime medical for the related injuries.
There are a lot of things Social Security will look at before you get any disability from them. And if you do file, expect to be turned down at least once if not twice. It's a long process.
If you are still young enough to work, then that would be the first thing to look at. Find a job that will train you or go back to school and get even an AA. Contact your local Job Service or Voc Rehab Services. Sometimes they can help you with retraining. Being diabetic isn't the end of the working world. I have worked with a great many diabetics through the years.
I'm disabled. What I did was find a lawyer who did Social Security Disablities. I could not afford to pay the first fee and I told the lawyers office this when I called. The lawyer waived that fee, and saw me, after talking with my wife and I he decided there was a case he agreed to take it, after that all fees are determined by Social Security, and that will or should be explained to you when they take your case, one thing is after the first visit you pay nothing until you WIN. If you are under 50 years old your chances I feel are greatly increased with a lawyer, if between 50-62 who knows I've seen some use a lawyer some don't some never got anything, and some did. It's a crap shoot without a lawyer it seems to me.
