What kind of RPM and power levels are 460 rods good to? The motor is out of a mid 80's f-350 4x2 5 yard dump truck. Would they be good to 5500 to 6000 rpm and 500 hp? I don't care if the rod bolts are weak since i'd be using ARP's anyway, it's just the rod itself i'm curious about.
What is the casting number on them?? Are the D0OE?? Do they have football shaped heads on the bolts?? If they do, then they should be good to around 600 hp and 6500 RPM's.
The bolts aren't the weak point. The rods usually break in the middle. The beams are really thin. The stock rods should be fine for what you what though.
The bolts aren't the weak point. The rods also don't break in the middle though. They break right around the head of the bolts. That is the thinnest portion of the rod. That's why the ones with football style heads are better. There is more metal in that critical area on them. If I were redoing and engine, I would put in new rod bolts. Regular ARP's are good enough. No need to get Wav-locks or any of that. Cheap insurance, IMHO.
Well since the engine is out of a truck, it most likely has the stronger rods. I haven't came across a truck motor yet that didn't, so you should be in good shape.
Your answer in a nut shell, if your only going to go 500hp and stay under 6500rpm..any of the stock 460 rods will work...and coming out of a heavy duty truck, they will be the stronger stock one's...
