Hello all--- I have a 99 F-350---stock with Rancho RSX shocks. Today I notice a strong vibration from either the middle or rear of truck at highway speeds, left turns and now when I go over bumps in the road. It sounds like my tires are rubbing on something or when you drift off the road on the interstate and the slices in the asphalt make this loud vibration noise to wake you up----know what im talking about here? i hope-----anyway that is the noise its making---its crazy??? does this ring a bell for anyone? I just added the RSX shocks recently, they are supposed to be self-adjusting???maybe they are bottoming out????? who knows----the key here is that it is on and off----tranny shifts fine, runs good, etc etc????????help please
so---wheel bearing----loose lug nuts---NO-----u-joint rust----I just hope its something minor----should I just wait and see what happens or pay the $$$ and have it checked??? I was just getting ready to spend $2500 on a paint job too!!
Are you sure about the wheel bearing? Is the left turn that you are mentioning a long sweeping one while on the freeway? If only one bearing race is bad and only in one spot you can make the noise come and go by side loading the wheel with the weight of the truck. It will pull the rollers off of the bad spot and put the weight on the opposite (smooth) side of the bearing. It's surpising how small of a chip in the race can make so much noise. And it will sound just like you are driving on a washboard. (The exact same shape as the wakeup strip on the side of the road.)
thank you again sir for the reply--Sorry, i wrote the last reply kinda wierd---no I dont know if its a wheel bearing or not--the noise you are describing(washboard) is exactly it!!! Now it does it when I accelerate, hit any bumps in the road, or just plain ol driving.......comes on loud (vibrates whole truck practically) and then smoothes out and its gone----and this cycles.....
sound like a wheel bearing???? I drove through deep water the other day due to these hurricanes we get here in fla---could that have caused it????
What's with this web site, that's about the tenth time I've tried to post and it dumps me off.
When you went through the deep water did you high center on anything that might have put a slight bend in the driveshaft? This would be REAL far fetched but somehow a stick is stuck in the yoke? Bad carrier bearing?
Wheel bearing noises usually don't come and go. They are constant with the noise getting louder the faster you go. You can make a marginal wheel bearing noise come and go by weaving strongly on the freeway and side loading the wheel bearing. But other than that they are a constant noise.
I suggest going to your local service station and putting the truck up on the lift with all four wheels off the ground, start the engine and get it into gear. Accelorate up to the speed that is giving you the most trouble. I'm sure the noise will show up and then you can start to find it.
