Piston Crud

When I got the heads off I saw the piston heads were covered in a thin layer of oil. Now that they are dry, it's a flaky film. It comes right off. Is this because of my fuel mixture or because my valve guides were bad? Or is this normal?

Without looking at them, my guess is that you have residue from burned oil on top of the pistons. The valveguides could be just fine, but if the stem seals are bad, oil will flow down the valvestem and get into the chambers from the intake side. If any leaks past the exhaust valve stem seal, you probably won't see it. It just burns up in the exhaust system. DF

Well, regardless of what it is, now it's became a problem. It's chipping and I think it needs to be cleaned out before I put her back together. I have the oil pan off so can I use some kind of cleaner (brake cleaner?) to wash that stuff out?

To put closure to this thread, each piston to TDC and blow them out with bottled air-no scraping.
