I tried this on the 1980-1986 forum and got no response, anyone here know. I have a '86 F250 Supercab, Superduty with 460 with C-6 and A/C. I seems to have a slow overheat on very long pulls with the 13'10" camper on board. I am told by the local parts guy that the '80 thru '95 trucks with a 460 all used the same radiator. My manual say the '80 thru '82 trucks had 24 quart cooling system and the '83 and '84 had 18 quarts and 86 thru '88 had 24 quarts again. So where'd the 6 quarts go in '83 and '84 if not a smaller radiator? I doubt the block got shrunk. My radiator is 2 1/4" thick has 3 cores and he says that's the large radiator. So is it? If not where did the 6 quarts go? I can get a 4 core after market, but I would really like to know the truth about this. Thanks for any input.
I would check with a local truck radiator repair shop. I have had three core radiators built for most cars I have owned and had a 1983 F150 inline six with more cooling capability than a one ton 460.
If I remember right my 91 F250 460 had a 4 row radiator. but it also had a trailer towing package form the factory and a HD radiator was part of the package.
Rvpuller, My truck is a superduty F250 which means it is reality a 1 ton. Truck is rated to 8800lbs and the GCVWR is another 10,700 lbs for a trailer at that weight cause it to has the tow package. Still the '83 and '84 460 trucks have a cooling system with only 18 quarts instead of 24 like before and after. I tried the local truck salvage yard and he claims all 460s 1980 thru 1995 used the same radiator, which just ain't so.
In that years of trucks if it was a Trailer or a Camper Special it would have a decal on the side of the truck saying what it was. Also in the 80s and 90s before the Superduty 99 to present there was a big difference between the F250 and F350. As far as a HD radiator I would buy a aftermarket if you can find a 4 row tube.
