parking brake troubles...help

2002 F150 7700 4X4 5.4L 42,500 miles

I'm the original owner of the above vehicle. The problem i'm having is with the parking brake not working. At around the 40,000 mile mark the parking brake pedal started to travel down to the floor without locking the rear wheels. I have always used the parking brake from day one when i park.

When i went to the dealership with my problem they told me that the left backing plate was rusted/corroded and needed to be replaced. My extended warranty did not cover this because "corrosion" is exempt.

The repair was quoted at $600. I blew a nut when i heard that. Long story short....the dealership paid 80% and i paid 20% or $125.

The rear axle had to be pulled and the differential cover had to be removed to do all this, so there was some labor involved with this. Please follow me with this because it gets better.

So, i get the truck back and the parking brake works pretty good again. This was done on august 4th 2004. Well, guess what doesn't work again???? So i go back to the dealership and they confirm that the pedal goes to the floor again and the brake is not holding the rear wheels.

Two hours later they call me and tell me that the right side backing plate is corroded and needs to be replaced like the other side was 2 months earlier.

I proceed to blow another nut and go off on the service department. I don't park in water or live near an ocean. My truck is pampered and yet they tell me that corrosion is the problem. They give me that 'caught in the headlights deer look'.

Has anyone heard of this or experienced this with any ford product? I can not believe that a 2 year old truck should have these issues. WTH!!!

I have basically the same truck. I live in Grand Rapids, and have never had that problem. I've never been impressed with the parking brake on this vehicle. Do you have rear drums? Mine has disc brakes on the rear.

I have a 2002 Ford F150 Fx4 4x4 with the 5.4 and have 39,000 miles. I was very interested to read your letter. Just a week ago a started hearing weird noise in back brakes. I took tires off and the emergency brake was sticking a little. I sprayed wd-40 to try to free up. It wasnt sticking alot but it is not working freely. After further inspection I dont think the passenger side rear is even working. If I pull the brake it does hold truck, but when I release it, it doesnt release all the way. I too use my brake everyday and also baby my truck, its like it was in 2002. I have been really concerned over this and I dont have extended warranty. I dont feel this is normal especially when you use it all time. Now I wont use it because I dont want to damage rotors and cause more expense! Let me know if you here anything new or have any suggestions! BK
