I am by no means a car stereo expert and was hoping someone could help me out. I bought a pioneer stereo for my 89' f-150 several months ago and it worked fine for a few weeks. One day my battery terminal was loose so my truck wouldn't start. It did have some power, however not enough to crank it over. I noticed when I tried to start it that my stereo was going on and off. After I got the terminal fixed the stereo sounded distorted and got worse as I turned the volume up until it would shut itself off and then come back on. I took the stereo to a pioneer shop and they replaced an audio output (or something like that). I put it back in the other day and it does the same thing. If I turn the volume up very loud it gets distorted and shuts itself off. I also noticed that when I turn my headlights either on or off, the stereo looses power for a second and then comes back on. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to explain it all. Anyway, does anyone have an opinion as to wheather this is a stereo problem or something else? Thanks a lot.
I don't know about that. I am going to take it out today but leave the speaker wires hooked up and hook a battery charger to the pos. and neg. and see if it may be a power problem.
sounds like it has a loose wire somewhere and is grounding out....i would check all your wires behind your head unit. try a buddies cd player and see if it happens to that one and while it's out try your cdplayer in a buddies car and see if it acts up then....least then you will know if it is your car or the head unit
I got the problem with the stereo shutting off when I turn on the lights by hooking it up to another power wire. there were two switched power wires going to the factory stereo and one of them would briefly loose power when I turned on the lights.
I still have the problem with the stereo being distorted and shutting itself off if turned up too loud. It seams to do this at a lower volume when using the CD player. I also turned the fader to the rear speakers and it doesn't seam to do this, however as soon as I start to fade to the front speakers it gets distorted and shuts off. Any ideas would be apreciated.
