whats up people.. i gots a bronco II 1986 4wd 5 spd manual 4x4 manual lockouts on 33x12.50 x15 i noticed my left front leaning in bad so i jacked that side up and the wheel rotor and all damn near fell off.. i pulled the wheel and the outer bearing had exploded and all that was holding the rotor on was the brake caliper.....sooooooooooo i pulled the caliper and slide the rotor offthen i poped that little springloaded c clip off ( almost lost it)slide the little washer/smallbearing looking things off the spindle and started trying to loosen the thing that holds bearing set in place( my bearings were in a hundred pieces) this is where im stuck
how the hell do you get the thing that threads onto the front axle housing that holds the outer front bearing set in place off... this damn thing won't budge
it threads on but it is not a nut it is smooth except for some slots...
i have tried using a hammer and a piece iron stuck into the slots
i have banged and banged on it....ideas anyone??????????
they make a socket for taking the nuts off it has 4 prongs that stickout (one version atleast they stick out) you can buy them at most autoparts stores, and work on most 4x4 front ends (please note I said most, and that doesn't include anything since 1999)
I made one from a piece of PVC (which broke), then from a piece 2 1/4" exhaust pipe and welded 4 little prongs on it. I had to weld a square plate on the other end and cut a square hole for the torque wrench. Works great!
You can also try a long screwdriver and hammer. That's what I've always used until I made the sockets.
get a file that is wider than the gap between tha notch and the wheel hub. then spin the hub in the same direction as you would to take the nut off. finally while the hub is spinning place the file between the hub and nut and then give it a quick twist so that it grabs into the hub and a notch on the nut. this is how i took my nuts off the frontend of my f150 until i got a deal on a socket. did this for many years on semis because the use like a 6" hex nut and the socket was out of this world in price.
just spend the 10 bux on the socket and be done with it. Order one if you have to. You will use it many, many times if you decide to actually 4wheel with your new purchase. Regular maintenence will stop what just happened to you in it's tracks. Load up on gear oil, wheel bearing grease and ATF fluid.
There should be a locking piece that locks the nut, you have to remove that before you can turn the nut. If i recall it is located on top side of the spindle under the nut. It can be a pain to remove Try a pick or a small screwdriver with a small magentic.
