I own an 85 4x4 v6 (2.8l) 5 speed with 105k miles. Last week I took a trip from NM to CA and on the way back the vehicle started acting like I was bucking wind, or like Intermittently applying lightly the brakes (no ABS). I thought of the repairs I did to make the trip, which were:
- plugs (platinum) about 15k mi ago
- solid core plug wires about 15k mi ago
- new fuel pump (mounts on engine near front of oil pan)
- new power steering pump
- new radiator hoses & antifreeze
- rebuilt carb about 15k mi ago
- have replaced front, rear and tranny oils with synthetics
At first I thought it was fuel delivery but if I give it more gas it doesn't worsen and picks up speed. I thought it was fuel and being low I stopped and filled up. The problem wasn't apparent until about 25 miles later, then the same. I continued driving and after another 50 miles it cleared up.
During the past 3 days driving it to work the problem has returned, getting worse. It is felt at freeway and surface driving. Seems to affect power delivery, like slows freeway speed by 5 mph at 70mph. Stop and go is affected by start off hesitation and thru the gears.
I suspect it will get worse! I'm thinking it's electrical but need help in further diagnosis. Any ideas would be appreciated.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Dec-01 AT 09:20 AM (EST)]kinda sounds like what my 85 was, is still doing and i personaly diddnt bother to correct the problem as i bought a newer b2 in better shape . but anyhow i narrowed mine to carb or EGR valve the egr has a sensor on the top which could be screwing up the whole unit would cost me upwards of 100.00 bucks but that was just calling one place and so ive been reading those carbs are junk. other than that id check all your vaccume lines. hope this helps a little
kinda like a buckin bronco? had a similar problem, replaced dist cap, rotor button and coil.... no problem since and only cost about 20 bucks....sometimes power delivery is effected by a bad coil try that
