Question 88 BII shift prob.

I Have And 88 Bii 2.9 I Have Recently Rebuilt The Motor. When I Got It, It Had Been Sitting Up For A While. Before It Was Parked For Heating The Tranny Had Just Been Rebuilt. Now It Wont Go Into O/d.

Three Q's- There Is A Plug Hanging Down On The Drivers Side Of The Tranny, The Vacuum Line Going To The Intake Feels Like Its Loose, But I Cant See Where It Goes Into The Tranny, So I Cant Tell If Its Loose Or Not, Also When I Pulled The Motor Out There Was An Orange Wire Pinched Between The Bell Housing And The Block, I Cant Figure Out Where That Goes Back To, Could It Be A Ground Wire Of Some Sort?

Could Any Of These Things Be The Problem? If Anyone Can Help Plllleeaasseee Reply I Would Greatly Appreciate It.
Also I Have A Rough Idle Sometimes It Wants To Cut Of And Fluctuates From Smooth Idle To Rough/low Idle And Cuts Off And Then Goes Back To Smooth Idle. Heeeellllpppppppppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 89 diagram shows a O/bk as one of the O2 wires and they are pinched between the engine and tranny a lot of times.

Would this wire being pinched or not hooked up cause it to idle rough? because its just got a wild idle smooth rough and back again. I cleaned the idac valve and the idle got worse. When i first crank it up, it runs fine, and a few moments later the idel turns wild. Thanks for any advice in this matter.

Faulty O2 sensor data can cause a rough idle. Best first step would be to run the self-tests to see if there is an O2 sensor code.
The plug (three wires in it I assume) would explain no 4th gear as well as no TCC lockup. These two functions are electronically controlled on '88+ A4LD's.

I've heard alot of people on this site talk about pulling codes.I dont know how to do that or where to start. Got any tips? Where exactly would the o2 sensor be located?

I have tried to find a place where the plug goes on the tranny. Is it possible that it could be an earlier model a4ld w/o electronic shift from 3-4.

The 3 wire plug should be, w, t/lb, r wires and plugs in on the drivers side of the tranny.

The O2 wire could cause your problems, is it a orange with a black strip? Do you have three wires at the O2 sensor, located on the top side of the exhaust pipe right when it comes down.

In the tech info thread at the top of the forum I have a link "pulling eec-iv codes", check that out for the codes.

The Wire Is Solid Orange And Has A Round Ground Connector On It. Yes The O2 Sensor Has Three Wires In It. I Pulled The Codes And Got A Code 41 It Says Ego Sensor Always Lean Not Switching.

I can send you the pinpoint test for the 41 if you need it. I don't have my color-coded diagram with me now but there is a O2 ground wire in the circuit, I'll get back to you.

Pin 49 at the ECU is an orange O2 ground wire, I'm not sure were it ends up.

Ken00, I Grounded The Wire And Replaced The O2 Sensor And Dont Have Any Idle Problems For Now. Keep Your Fingers Crossed. But Now I Have Another Problem. I Accidently Pulled Loose, What I Think Is A Vacuum Line Form The Tranny. It Is Metal And Has A U-shaped Loop On The End. When I Found It, I Pulled The Shifter Out And Looked Through The Floor At The Top Of Tranny. I Saw A Male End Looking Vacuum Plug On Top Of The Tranny With Nothing Attached To It. Then I Saw A Rubber Hose On The Side Of The Tranny. Hooked The Metal Vacuum Line To The Rubber Hose And Then Drove It Up The Road And It Had To Build Up High Rpm Before It Would Shift Into 2nd And 3rd. Then I Let It Sit For A Few Days. When I Got The Idle Fixed I Drove Up The Road Again And It Would Not Shift Into 2ndunless I Put It In 1st And Manually Put It Into 2nd And It Would Not Go Into 3rd At All. Did I Hook Up The Vacuum Line In The Wrong Place???? I Wondered Because Its Curved On The End, That Makes Me Think It Plugs In From The Back Side And Runs Along The Side Of The Tranny And Up To The Vacuum On The Plenum. But If Thats How It Is Where Does The Rubber Hose Go? I Think It May Be Right Because Before It Sit Up It Shifted Into 2nd And 3rd But It Took High Rpm's To Get There. I Put A Can Of Trans-x Stop Leak In It Because It Was Leaking A Litlle, Could That Have Anything To Do With It Any Help Would Be Appreciated!! IF ANYONE HAS A DIAGRAM THEY COULD POST OR EMAIL IT WOULD BE GOOD!!!!!!!

The vacuum line should run from the tee on the drivers side to the modulator on the side of the tranny.
