my spedometer is playing games. it seems correct (about, givin my 35"s throw it off) when im in neighborhoods, but i was following my dad today, he was doin 60 and my speedometer read anywhere from 70 to 80 mph! when slowing and accelerating it kinda bounces sometimes, too. any suggestions?! THANKS
no, i didnt change the tranny gear, but my prob was that it was sayin i was goin 10-20 mph FASTER than i was. anyway, i started tearin it apart, didnt get it all the way but was playin with it with my fingers until i realized i had somewhere i needed to be (take girlfriend to a movie). well, the speedo works as normal now, but i guess i bumped the gas gauge and bent that needle, and unhooked the lights to the dash. was a good movie though (napolean dynomite)
Usually when the speedometer shows faster the speedometer head itself is worn out internally. The bouncing needle shows that the speedometer cable needs lubrication or replacement. Many times the cable will simply need to be replaced.
use white grease it won't harden and will last a long time
They make a specific speedo cable lube, it is of a graphite oil mix.
As far as a bouncing needle, I have changed the speedometer and put the cable from my other truck on and it still bounce's. The cable did not cause my other truck's needle to bounce around. I am thinkin more of a bad gear in the trans. Every truck is of different nature tho also.
hey, thanks for all the help! my speedo's been "normal" since i put it back together, so i guess it's kinda hard to pinpoint a prob right now. hopefully it stays normal (knock on wood). i bet the gremlins in my truck are logged on reading this right now
