Problem with FIPK!!!

I have a 96 F150 with a factory MAF setup and installed a K&N FIPK. I got a lean code on bank 1 & 2 (174 & 171). I cleaned oil from wires in MAF sensor with a Q-tip & reset code in about 20 miles. I also have a high flow cat and Flowmaster American Thunder exhaust. The factory MAF has a port in it where the sensor wires are located & a plate on the back side held by 2 screws. I took this off because I figured more air was flowing around the port than could go through it. This seemed to fix my problem. It is to early to say since I have only drove it once since. After taking this off it ran really rich idling but seemed alright after I returned from test drive. Has anyone had this problem before and if so how did you fix it. Could my MAF be bad? will this give me a true reading from the MAF? What is the purpose of the plate on ther back side? I figured it was incase of a backfire to protect the MAF from contamination. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry so long I just wanted to include as much info as possible. Thanks!!
