The 4.2l V-6 is back in the 05 F-150's. Only for regular cabs but it is available with a manual transmission. Thought I'd let you guys know if you haven't heard already.
It gets the same mileage as the 4.6 but isn't as good. Thank god it is only in the regular cab. I know a guy that had a 98 supercab 4.2 with the 5 speed manual and it was a wimp. Anything that is that big with that small of an engine needs help. The 4.6 is borderline small in my opinion. It looks like the 4.2 V6 is only for cheap worktrucks now. Repeat after me... V6 are for cars and nothing larger than an Explorer.
I can't agree with that... I have ridden and driven a 2000 Supercab with Manual trans. It had plenty of power, truck had 3.55 gears. Seemed to have quite a bit of get up and go.
I've also ridden in and driven a 98 F150 with the 4.6 and manual trans, and towed a 17' Boston Whaler. Seemed to have plenty of power.
I've also ridden in a 00 Expy with the 5.4, and while it had more power, it didn't seem to have that much more.
Well the V8 4.6 is smoother, gets basically the same gas mileage, has more power, has a higher resale value, is more effective for towing, and doesn't cost that much if any more. So why would you want the V6? The V6 is great in the ranger and other small vehicles but it does not belong in these trucks. People may say "I don't need a V8" but when fuel mileage and cost are nearly identical why wouldn't you? I guess I just don't agree with you but if someone wants to save $200 that bad then get the dorky V6 and the mazda 5 speed.
