Pops out of 4wd?

My 86 BII pops out of 4wd after driving around for a little while. It doesn't make any noises, the 4x4 light just turns off and the traction goes away. If you drive along holding it in 4wd, all is well. What would cause this, and how do I fix it? It has manual hubs/transfer case. Thanks!

Just a guess - is there a linkage problem or some sort of alignment issue with the shifter? (is there any linkage to HAVE a problem?)
