Does anyone actually use their 4x4 Expy for off-roading? If so, how well does it handle the tough conditions. Any tips to pass along? The owners manual is not much help - it just says "hang on tight to the steering whell and don't go too fast!"
I drive on the beach all the time, and i am constantly pulling explores, blazers, and even yukons/tahoes out of the sand. About the only truck i havent helped off the beach is a Hummer. The Expi is the best thing i have ever driven in soft sand.
One time(after a beer or 2 of course) i decided it would be fun to drive my expi on the supercross track i used to race my dirtbike on, it was pouring rain, no good for dirtbike riding that day. I couldnt believe how far i made it until i got stuck. i was going through some serious mud and ruts, 2-3 feet deep. i finally bottomed out and got stuck though, and got pulled out by a Chevy with 36 inch tires, a sad day!
My tip would be, take it slow, let some air out of the tires, at least down to 20lbs, it give you a nice wide footprint, as long as you never bottom out(running boards hit first), you'll be fine.

If you get into heavy off-roading with the running boards in place, then think of the boards as consumable items, kind of like really expensive paper cups
The biggest issue is that an Expy is just a few feet wider than a Jeep Wrangler. Makes snaking between trees a little more challenging. Never hurts to tuck the rear view mirrors in.
Is your Expy equipped with the factory skid plates? Good investment, particularly the gas tank plate.
