Let me start with I sold my 96 F250 X-cab 2WD "PSD" and bought a 2001 F250 XLT CC 4X4 LWB auto "5.4L V8". for $13,500 all stock "very" clean with high miles (130,000). I went with the 5.4L because (1) I don't pull large trailers anymore (use to have large goose-neck horse trailer, now a small 2 horse) (2) cost $$ (3) and I only drive it on weekends.
Sense I bought this truck I have added nurf bars, a 4" lift, 35" ATs, new rims, custom exhust, 4.56 gears, a new auto trans, and now 140,000 miles.
I can't get anyone to even look at it for $16,500. As soon as I say 5.4L they say "I'm looking for a Diesel" (Every Time!). So, I'll just have to keep driving it. (AND THAT'S NOT A BAD THING!) I was just looking to see what I could get for it.
But it is something to think about for the next truck.
PS.
The 96 sold to the first person that looked at it!
The 01 5.4 runs/pulls "SO" much better with the 4.56 gears.
when i was looking for trucks, i found the 5.4's and psd's were a dime a dozen. I actually had to search out my v10. maybe check autotrader to see what simmiliar vehicles are going for. Thats pretty high miles for a 4 year old vehicle too.
These are just personal opinions; I don't think the 5.4L should have ever been put in an F-250, especially the 4x4. That is high miles for a gas motor and throw on a lift which makes people think it could have been some hard miles or off-road miles.
AGAIN, this is just personal opinions.
Fordafied, what's wrong with the 5.4L motor in a 250? I'm hearing mostly good things. Hoping for some new news on the 2005 application as well. But so far as I'm hearing, it tows pretty well (i.e. RIS tows 2 horses with it). RIS, how much weight is that in the trailer?
Well there is towing and then there is towing. If you want to tow something small say 10 to 20 miles, it should due fine. If you want to tow something around 7k and up 100 miles and up, I think it is too taxing on the motor and drive train. Keep in mind that I am basing this on me towing my boat (approx. 4500lbs) w/our Exp. with the 5.4L. The Exp. does not weigh nearly as much as my 250. After the 150-mile trip, it was all the exp. wanted to tow. I was towing in the Blue Ridge mnts. Now if you want the 5.4L just to cruise or style and profile, it should due great. These are only opinions and I have not personally towed with a 5.4L 250, but my Exp. has the tow package.

Its a "LITTLE" 2 horse trailer and one horse is about 1300 lbs (too big for trailer & too fat for his own good but he still fits) the other horse is about 1000 lbs. I pull them from 10 miles to a 100 miles and in OD with no problem. I do have 4.56 gears W/35" tires and I'm way South in MS. & LA. flat land. I've pulled my 16' trailer with 4 ATV's and one in the bed to Arkansas & back. But this could be done with an F150. But not with near the comfort of the F250 CC. (REMEMBER I used to have a PSD!)
IT IS A GOOD TRUCK! ESPECIALLY for what I do with it. NOW!!!
fordafied
I also have an Exp. (but) with a 4.6 (wife's "car") that I wouldn't tow a thing with. And YES there IS TOWING AND THERE IS TOWING.
I onced moved (about 20 miles) an over 20,000 ?? lb. track-hoe for my brother-in-law's bulk-head business (he was in a pinch) with my 96 250 PSD. Pucker factor was high and my leg was shaking. Just like the time I hooked up the 5.4L 250 to the sled at a tractor truck pull (leg was shaking again). Out pulled 2 PSD 1 ton dualies (& a cummings).
IN ONE LINE: Get what you need.
ON THE SECOND LINE: Think resale! ( HAD TO SAY IT! ) Now that's my problem!
