which side of engine is bank#1?

I need some help.. Which side of the engine is "bank #1"? I have the code P1395 that means "glow plug monitor - bank #1". I am thinking of checking my UVC connections, etc. as I have the SES light illuminated, and the same old surge / miss that is getting a bit worse every week. I would like to pull apart the suspect "bank #1" side first.

Unless they made a change with the Diesels, bank 1 on any Ford V8 has always been the drivers side. GM and Chrysler were the opposite. Also, Ford has always labled their V8's cylinders from front to rear, i.e. the cylinder closest to the right front is number 1, and the cylinder on the right rear near the firewall is number 4. GM and Chrysler have numbered theirs in a crisscross manner. Since the PSD is made by International though, maybe this protocol has changed?

Bank 1 is the right hand side of the engine. Looking at the engine from the front of the vehicle # 1 cyl is on the left. right bank 1,3,5,7 left bank 2,4,6,8.

I was taught that all descriptions of locations on a vehicle were as viewed from sitting in the driver's seat, NOT as viewed from the front of the vehicle looking over the grille. Thus, the right bank is on the passenger side, on the left as you actually look at it. Of course, this is DieselLand, and all may be different here! Confused? I may be!

Yes from the drivers seat it is the right hand side. So than if your looking at the engine from the front (as you would be when working on it) and put one hand on each head, bank 1 is under your left hand. I see how this can be confusing, sorry.

hey guys easy way to tell. Whichever cylinder head sticks out further (toward radiator) is the odd numbered side.

Yea, I remember that, too. Cylinder farthest forward in chassis is number one. Depending on block design, that could be on either bank.

Looks like the passenger side bank leads the way in number of responses.
Thanks for the info...
