I bought the new NSS but discovered that it was replaced with a new one when the trans was rebuilt. I got under the truck and unplugged the NSS because I was going to remove it. I decided against doing that and plugged it back in. The next day the trans shifted MUCH smoother. The trans wouldl start shifting hard at the same spot on my commute to and from work every day. I kept expecting the violent shifts but they never happened. I did have a few firm shifts but nothing near as bad as the day before. I told my mechanic about this and he said that the NSS should have no bearing on how the trans shifts. It seems to be working fine now but I'll see how long it lasts.
I pulled the plug and cleaned it with electrical cleaner, and put electrical grease in it. its been shifting great and your mechanic is wrong.
The NSS has everything to do with it shifting correctly.

I am new to f150's as I have only had it a week.
Mine bucks/clunks when going into drive but seems to shift smooth through the gears when driving.
I am taking it in for a tranny service (fluid, filte, gasket) but is there somethingelse I should do.
I have used LUCAS tranny supplement before and felt a difference.
When you hold the brake and shift to any gear, do you hear and feel the clunk?
Check the driveline for a worn out u-joint.
That is usually not a tranny issue (clunks when initailly placed in drive gear).
Automatic tranny.
Park to reverse - nothing much (sounds and feels normal)
Park to drive - CLUNK
reverse to Drive - CLUNK
Drive to reverse - smaller Clunk
The harder I hold the brake the smaller the clunk.
I never have checked Drive 2 and Drive 1.
I am taking the driveshaft off this weekend to replace the tranfercase seal. I will play with the u-joints to see how free moving they are. i noticed that they have grease nipples. Should I replace or grease if they are stiff?
Thanks for the reply.
