1996 F-150 4.9 l automatic On the highway onlong trips no problem . As soon as you get to in town driving it will die. With no rhyme or reason. Some times it starts back up immediately sometime you have to crank it a few times. Stumped
You can be driving down the road and let up on it and it quits but only in town. Ill clean that air intake throttle plate. I know chrysler is real touchy about it. Maybe this Old Ford is too.
Is there any correlation to the level in the gas tank and the dying problem?
I was having similar problem develop on my 96 S-10.... could drive 35 miles on the interstate when I left work and it would be fine until I got to town. Would often stall at or when leaving a red light.
I figured out it only did it when it was very how outside and when the tank was less than half full. Chevy has whiney fuel pump (all do) and I could hear it running, but finally was able to hear it change pitch. Bought a fuel gauge and ran the truck with it installed and laying against my windshield. Was finally able to see it happen... fuel pressure would drop and truck would die. Usually would start back up with out much problem but would quickly die again.
I never figured out if it was fuel pump going bad (would have been 2nd at nearly $500 each ) or if it was trash plugging the suction sock, causing vapor lock. I decided to trade it and buy my Ford.
This may not be any help but then again maybe........
The fuel pumps are suspect I guess I wouldnt suspect them because there are 2 of them . Could be both going bad Ill get a long fuel pressure guage and hose and go for a drive. Thanks
