power steering leaks. it was really messy so i cleaned it good and had my girlfriend turn the wheel for me so i could spot the leak. found the leak coming from the rubber hose that sends the fluid from the pump to the power steering mechanism on the inside of the frame
in the picture you can see the fluid spraying out. there's a little rubber sleeve around the hose above where it's leaking. it looks like some kind of backup. i tried sliding the sleeve over the leak but fluid just comes out the side, drips down the hose to the metal coupling then the utility belts blows it all over the place. i'm thinking maybe i should glue or heat it with a blowtorch to make it stick a little so it will hold the leak. any comments on that idea?
if that doesn't work i'm thinking is to just get a length of this hose. it's printed on the side it's 3/8 inch hose but the outside measurement is quite thicker really, probably to handle all the pressure. there's a serial number i'm sure i can get the correct hose but i have no idea how to secure it into the couplings.
at one end the hose is a coupling connecting it to a 1/4" steel line from the pump. at the other end the hose connects to a T-coupling that sends the fluid back into a 1/4" steel line to the power steering unit with an electric plug in the middle.
does it take special tools to secure the hose into these couplings? do i need to get new couplings before i tear out the old hose? once it's out it's kind of hard to get other parts?
also if i'm going to start fighting with that hose odds are i might crack one of the steel lines. i have steel pipe that i can bend but what size thread bolts do i need to connect the flanged ends to the power steering unit and fluid pump?
hope someone can help me here
btw the truck is a f150 1990, 2wd, 302 auto with a/c
Do what you want, but the only way to stop it from leaking is to just replace that hose all together.
If you go to the parts store to get another hose you will recieve everything alreadt assembled to instal in your truck.
Quick fixes won't get you no where except for mechanical problems in the future that will cost more cash to fix properly.
I'd pick up a new hose. Often if you go to a Pep Boys or Autozone, they'll type some things on their computer and can get your that hose length and bolt fittings in about 10 min. Shouldn't be too expensive and it looks like an easy fix. Just be sure you let everything settle before you change the hose. Good luck.
I third the new hose recommendation. It's not expensive (less than 20 bucks) and you have the peace of mind of not worring about a repair holding up. It's quicker, cheaper, safer, less of a pain, and longer lasting to just replace it.
Just don't forget to transfer the PSPS from the old one to the new one before you throw the old one out.
hi there folks was workin on my ford today and noticed my Powerstering was leaking. i the pic on the earlyer post where his hose had a leak on the back side is a sensor??? plug leakin like a sive not the female plug but the mail end ya all know what this is?? im guessing a sensor???? it has a black and yellow wire going to it im tryin t plug it up but would like to fix it right. but chiltons does not show what it is maybe ya all can help thanks folks
the rubber over the hose was just to protect it from rubbing.
just replace the hose, and do what i did and replace the other one at the same time.
less than 40 bucks for both. less than an hour and 2 beers later and you will be done.
the fittings tat go into steering box are the hard part. sometimes they do not want to thread in too easy. one of the fittings never tightens, the hose line still moves. it was in the instructions on which one did this.
oh, and clean the whole area twice before you take the old ones off. a lot of rust and crap. you have to take the air box out if i remember right.
can you tell i did this?
do you ever watch the red and green show on pbs? they would like how you wanted to fix this leak. they try to fix everything with duct tape. very funny show.

Looks like the pressure line, just replace it, its not that expensive. You don't want to keep filling that pump up with fluid, I had to on my BII. If you run the pump low on fluid you can damage it and get all that crap into your stearing-box.
i didnt mean the hose its self onthe back side is a round metal plug the female end is connected to the hose its fine the male end that plugs into it with two wires a black and yellow one are shot.thats what is leakin im going to try some different permatex's till i can chase down the other end. hope its got a plug on the other end . if it does i will take to ford see what the say if not maybe hit junkyard cut and splice a good used one in . thanks for the fast reply
