Inexpensive 351 build

What is a realative cheap build for a 351, I would like to make some good power without breaking the bank, the motor is a 2bbl out of an early 70's LTD.

We have a book in Motorhaven's store that is called "how to build a high performance ford V-8 on a budget"...I highly recommend.

Having a stock bottom end re-done so it's in good shape, then some good flowing heads and a good cam will improve a lot.

"We"? Are you considered an employee of FTE? Just curious.

Define cheap? I see cheap as, a used stock aluminum 4bbl intake, used stock 600cfm holley 4bbl carb, home ported heads and a cam someone give me. Whats your definition?

jwtaylor: something like that, the major bank busters would be heads for me, other than porting the stock heads would some E7's or explorer heads from a junk yard be a better idea, the engine would be going in a '79 mustang that has a 302 in it and a 4speed, I'm just not made of money and was thinking of a 460 but I would like to keep the weight down.
I can get an aftermarket intake, cam and carb those all fit the budjet.

Look under the intake ports of the heads, with the intake off or flip the heads over if they are off. What is the casting number? Should start with a C or D and be followed with three other characters, may have a dash then one or two more but not necassarily. Example **** - **

Other than needing hardened exhaust seats, the 70 heads are as good or better than the e7's, will know more when if and when you post up a casting number. Explorer heads would be a decent option if you could get them cheap enough (you'd need to open up the head bolt holes, actually have a machinist do it). Figure out what you can do with the rear end gear wise, and determine which tranny and stall if auto you plan to use, then determine the headers intake and carb you plan to use, talk with comp cams or crane and let them know what your trying to do, they will give you a part number for the camshaft that best suites your needs, then you can take the part number and call summit or jegs and your in business. Good luck

I dont have the motor apart yet it is at a friends farm for now, I thought that 351 heads were supposed to flow worse on the exhaust side than 302 heads?
I was thinking of souping up the 302 but the extra grunt of the 351 is so tempting when racing ricers and camaros.

All told the 302 and 351w heads are the same for either the 351w or 302, only difference is the head bolt hole size. There are variations of the heads, the gt-40's being the best but whether they were on a 351w or 302 they were the same.
