302 Hot Start issue

Hey All,

New to the list, and in a bit of a hurry, so no time to check the archives as much as I'd like, but here's my issue.

1989 Econoline 250, auto. It has a 302, although it was born with a 351W. A remanufactured motor was placed in it before I bought it. Supposedly got 40k on this 302.

Cold, she starts perfectly. Hot, she is very hard to turn over, whir, whir, whir, then spins quickly to life. I have a new starter, solenoid, and battery, no difference at all, have cleaned all the cable ends as well.

Is this a tight thrust bearing issue? What's the list's experience here?

Thanks in advance,

Steve in Seattle

Heat off the manifold can cook a starter sometimes and cause hot starting problems. I have verified that it was the starter before by cooling the starter with a water hose while the engine was hot and the normally slow when hot condition went away. Another cheap and quick check is to remove the coil wire from the engine when it is at normal operating temp and see if it spins normal speed. Then connect the wire back up and if it spins slow again, the timing needs to be checked. But the timing should affect the engine some when it is cold too. Oh well, just a couple of cheap driveway checks! Good luck.

Thanks for that. What concerns would I have about turning the engine over with the coil wire disconnected? I'm worried about frying the ECM.

The motor (when hot) is starting like the timing is way too advanced.

I had the same problem with mine...but after ignoring it for a while (it still started after a bit) I got stranded because of it (far from home and after having worked all night...unfun). Changed the starter and hot starts were fine, no problems.

Yes, but the starter is a new (remanufactured) unit!
