Off road fuel

FTE folks,
I was talking on a construction site the other day to a guy who runs off road fuel in his truck. I know this is a little bit less than legal but I am wondering if there is a difference in the fuel itself. Is the OR fuel better or worse in quality than pump fuel? He said that it is better than the pump fuel.

In almost every case these days, it's the exact same fuel through all of the refining and delivery process, until the very end, where they dump a legally proscribed type and amount of red dye in. It's not just illegal to run it on road, it's immoral. You'd be using the road and not paying for it like the rest of us. Shame on anyone who is so self-centered to do that.

The only difference other than the dye as Duncan points out is that the road taxes have not been paid on it and there is a HUGE fine WHEN you are caught.... not if...

Probably doesn't know why. But if he did have an answer as to why he may think it is better because he thinks that it has a higher sulpher content.

Me thinks this was covered at length on another thread but to lazy to look right now.

Being a bonnified Texas Land Baron my Ag exemption lets me purchase red dye diesel all day everyday. But I don't...I actually don't even use it in my tractor (when it is running).

I try not to have to shred enough to worry about it. Neighbors cows takes care of most of it anyway.

I was @ a truckstop in Live Oak, florida last week and was talking to the owner about the off road fuel they had, he said it has a higher sulfer content than the road fuel, that has to meet federal reg. I ran off road fuel in my 93 1/2 factory turbo diesel as often as I could. but I am hesitant to do it in the 6.0 for the simple fact the engine was designed to run on LOW sulfer fuel. but in the 93 1/2 I ran anything I could get in the tank, heck I even ran home heating oil, & ran like a raped ape. now I now people here are going to start YELLING thats illeagal, thats not right, one question, have you ever, EVER done anything against the law? think about it before you post a negative reply.

Problem is...the people who get caught complain the the loudest about law enforcement and the laws themselves. Not to mention belly acheing about the penalties.

I occasionally exceed the posted speed limit. I think that's about it. BUT (here I go, I'm going to sound like your mother) that's not a valid argument for anything. Just because I sometimes speed doesn't mean I can't yell at the guy who holds up a liquor store. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" is a clever phrase but it doesn't take into account the range of laws and effects and victims.

If you really want to get me started (I think you'll agree, you don't want to get me started!!) I could go on for hours about how our stupid government has created a society of people with no respect for the law, by creating laws that people have no respect for, which trains them to not care about other, more important laws. The two biggest ones on my hit list are the original unjustified 55MPH national speed limit, and the insane federal tax code. Discuss amongst yourselves; I'll bow out before you get me started.

Does anyone know why suddenly diesel is more expensive than gasoline in Texas while historically diesel has always been less expensive?

Holy Crap

Wow. Lots o' opinions out there on running red fuel!

Let me be clear about this: I do not intend to run the red stuff in my truck. I was just wondering if anyone knew about the difference in the quality. KW5413 mentioned the sulphur content and I suspect that is what my friend was refering to. So along with that I also wondered to myself if the higher sulfer fuel would be bad on the 6.0, agiain, not that I intend to do so myself. Turbo Indian indicated that to be the case (high sulfur=bad on 6.0). That is really what I was after.

Thanks for the quick replies.

same here, diesel started up in price when gas started coming down. somthing needs to be done about it. last week I spent $1135.22 in diesel fuel, yes it was highway fuel. I'm sure yall on the other side of the field in CA are used to it but I've been having to paying $2.06- $2.13 for fuel in FL (vasoline not included).
