Ok....I now know that I have a Carter FYA carb on my 84.
Maybe I just going about it wrong, but I can find NOTHING concerning anything labeling what things are on this thing. I can find all sorts of places that want to rebuild mine, or sell me a rebuilt one, but nothing that shows me what screw does what or what this, that or the other on this carb is.
As many as are on the road I find it hard to believe that I can find no detailed diagrams for this....is there ANYONE who has such that would be willling to share ? I have a Haynes manual from Autozone that gives some worded adjustment advice, but if you don't know that screw or part on the carb is what, you're lost....I am........HELP !! Please..........
I know your pain and have felt it too. A good rebuild kit will come with an exploded diagram. Look them over and make some time if you do decide to DIY. It is not at all impossible, it's just a thing, made of parts. Any carb is made up of the same basic parts as it has to do the same basic thing. Something approaching surgical cleanliness will seem extreme until a piece of dirt ruins your day. After getting the parts, lay them out to get a mental pic and then proceed to disassemble the unit. Soak it in spirits(avoid hot solvents, IE; lacquer thinner, toluene, mek, mibk, as there may be imbedded seals or parts), blow it out very well. A can of air for cameras/computers works well for the small passages. Hard to hear over a blow gun. Then assemble using the directions. Be aware that the linkage arms and links are one position only. Take a photo or draw the orientation beforehand. A magnifying glass helps much too. I had to get three carbs(Holleys) and break them all down as I needed something from all of them. It was a true Frankenstein. It worked ok but was a bitch to adjust. Secondary stops under the throttle body, etc. Also make sure you replace all the vacuum lines associated with the carb. Dist, EGR, idle actuator, etc. Good luck!

Found www.carburetion.com. Deals in new and old carbs, has searchable ...database for carb numbers and tech line numbers for several mfgrs. Might be of some help .

your '84 carb won't have any adjustment screws b/c it is a feedback carb. That means the computer controls the idle and what not.
Yes, I would LOVE to know how to slow the stupid idle down....when it warms up it is like the choke never pulls off...........although i have checked and it has....it just idles really fast and the fumes burn your eyes if you're near the exhaust...I have got tp take it in for an insp. and I know the idle issue will not make it......Suggestions ???

Sounds like it is running really rich.. I am assuming you checked the choke to make sure it has opening 100%, right?
I've never got my 300 to idle perfectly, but the main reason why mine was idling at 1800rpms was b/c of major vacuum leaks. The computer probably sees is as a lean condition, and is dumping the gas on it..
The feedback carbs still have adjustment screws..you can still adjust idle mixture, Fast idle and idle..you can go so far to adjust the metering valve. Idle is on side. Also may want to check if the stepper motor (big motor looking thing on pass side back of carb) and see if it's applying pressure to the throttle. I Have an 84 with feedback carb and manual tranny . the identification tab reads(e4te va b 4 d i9) on my carb. I have 300 w/man tran. I ended up dumbing down the truck (no more computer controls) so i'm using an older carb but i wrote down the tag code that was on the original.
Idle mixture screw pass side base of carb. Idle/fast idle on drivers side on the throttle lever. the idle screw is the lower of the two screws on the drivers side. There's also a metering rod inside the carb that in some cases can be adjusted (my feedback had this adjustment) but you have to open it up adj 1/4 turn then assemble it back FordSix Post on adjusting the metering rod
i wouldn't worry about the metering rod too much. work w/idle speed and mixture first.
