I currently have a '91 Ranger STX, 2WD 3.0L. I just purchased the truck and it's great, but I notice a problem is that the blower motor, or fan, only operates on high. Low, medium etc. don't work. I find this interesting in that my last Ranger, an '88 XLT with the 2.3L had the exact same problem from the time I purchased that truck until it when to the junkyard.
Is this a common problem with the Rangers and what can be done to fix it?
I think it's actually caled the blower resistor. Napa will have it for about 20 bucks. It plugs into a hole in the heater duct under the hood with 4 or 5 wires. Simple fix.
Hi I'm new. I have a 99 B3000 which has the same problem. Blower operates on high speed only. I replaced the resistor unit and the fan worked on all speeds for a day or so then back to high only. I expect that I've blown the resistor unit. Is this telling me that the fan is getting ready to go out? Seems like the electrical circuit for the blower can't be too complicated.

If the bearings in the blower motor are shot, it will overload the resistor.
Thanks. I figured that replacing the fan was the next logical step. I'm not getting any uhusual noises that would indicate that the bearings in the fan are going out. Once the heat sensor in the resistor unit has gone off, is the resistor unit dead?
The only things that I can think of that would cause the resistor to fail are a bad electrical connection somewhere or a bad blower motor. If you have a wiring diagram, check that the connectors for the blower motor & relays are on tight. R&R them to clean the connections. Closest wiring diagram I have to yours is for a 97 Explorer. The strange thing is that nowhere on the diagram does it show where the blower switch is grounded??????? A loose ground connection could also cause the blower resistor to fail.
See if you can open up the old resistor & figure out why it failed. Might even be able to repair it
Thanks for the help. I replaced the blower motor and all is well. The old motor turned a little stiff and I guess was just enough to cause an overheat at low speeds. Thanks again.
