2000 Ranger XLT Tranny problem-- Help!

Last Saturday the O/D light flashed on and off and it was slipping on acceleration. When the tranny slipped out gear it would go up to 5-6000 rpm and you would have to let up on the gas in order for it to drop back down. Then after when the real trouble started that is when I was pulling a trailer down the road. The truck felt like you were going over rumble strips. It was slipping in and out gear all the way home -- about 10 miles. Then when I got home that is when I found out that I didn't have reverse. Now it will drive forward with the selector but it goes in Drive between Park and Reverse.. it drives in Neutral and it drives in Drive 2 and 1 as usual.

Any ideas on what to check first, second then third? <grin> I'm not leaving a stone unturned here.

Thanks!

The VSS is a common problem that causes tranny problem but normally comes with an ABS light and a erratic/no speedometer. Hows the fluid. If it's not a the VSS I would have the code pulled.

When was the last time you changed the fluid and filter?

The VSS is a possibility, but like Ken says, there is usually more than just the tranny symptoms when it goes. Along the same lines, another thing to consider is the wire harness under the driver's seat:

On the other hand, the problem could be more tranny-related. Check the ATF fluid, make sure it's not dark and/or smells burnt. It should be a reddish color.

P.S. Welcome to FTE!
