Stupid Question, what socket needed for plugs?

My sister-in-law is in town and her 96 4.0L Explorer is misfiring on no. 6 and none of my mustang spark plug sockets fit (I have/had multiple V8 and Pony stangs over the years). So for my first post I thought I'd ask a elementary question, since her car has no manual... what size socket do I need to pull these plugs?

Frog, you need the 5/8" size socket. There are basically two sizes, a 13/16" and a 5/8". The 13/16" is the older size, and fits the larger (older type) spark plugs. The 5/8" is the more "modern" size.

If a new plug dosen't fix it, test the wire with an ohmmeter; should have about 8K-12K ohms per foot. Clean the terminals. If the code persists, then suspect the coil pack. For some reason, these Explorers are prone to misfires......

thelonerangerxlt,

Thank You. I finally got the plug out, needed a different ratchet and attachments to get the socket positioned correctly. Seems that her Explorer has 106K miles on it still running the stock plugs, not good.

Am I correct in stating that this 4.0L requires Platinum Plugs?

Glad you got it out, Frog, some are hard to reach. Yes, plats are need for the 4.0. It has a "wasted spark" ignition system, in which the plug is fired on both compression and exhaust strokes.

For this reason, you don't want to switch original equipment plugs to opposite engine banks. Aftermarket plugs are OK to switch, because both electrodes are platinum (whereas original equipment are plat on only one electrode).

Probably more than you wanted to know.........

No, that helps. Now I just have to figure out how to get to the other 5 plugs without dismantling the engine Thanks Again.

Best way to get the passenger side plugs out is thru the wheel well. It's pretty easy that way...

So loneranger are the double plat plugs necessary o nthe 94 Explorer? I just purchased the Autolite single plat at Autozone with a rebate. This brings up another question; Are those Bosch 4 electrode platinum plugs worth the $5.99 a piece? I ran them in my old Suburban and could "maybe" tell a difference for the first 1K or so miles. They have some guarantee that I'm sure nobody takes them up on.

Akprw, the 94 is supposed to use the double platinum, but you can get away with using the single platinum for a while if you've already installed them. What will happen is that one cylinder bank will wear the plug (side) electrodes faster than the other bank. I've forgotten which bank does this, but I think it may be the driver's side......?

I've no experience with the 4 electrode plugs, so I can't answer that one. Some people swear by them, some swear at them.
