I have a 352 that I want to put a 428 crank and 390 H-beam rods into, then put an 8-71 BDS blower on it. The blower is already here brand new in the box. It will all go in my 65 (in my gallery). Anyone have any suggestions or ideas that would help. I will have this all done before thanksgiving this year.
Sounds like fun! Those FE blocks are some of the strongest engine blocks out there. The bottom end support with the skirts below the center line of the crank are especially good. Keep us posted!
I'd look for a later block. Not only will you have to bore it .050 ot get to 360/390/410 dimensions, you dont have the additional main webbing that you get with a later block. With your blown setup this becomes important. You're looking for a D3TE block. Look in '73 - '76 trucks. Add ARP hardware and you're good to go.
Yup, got a 390/6-71 sitting in a '64 Galaxie. Pretty stock right now, mild Crower cam. I am in the process of gathering parts for a 410 build with "good" rods/pistons so I can turn it up a notch or two.... I actually want to "borrow" the motor that is in there and put it in my '67 F100 since it is need of a rebuild. So building a stout replacement for Galaxie is in the books.
The big thing to watch out for is making sure the blower/carbs will fit in front of the cowl. Not sure how it looks on early models, but 67-72 stick out and when I measured it up I would have do either move motor forward or cut cowl. Not cutting so....I kinda axed that idea.
That was my "good" block. It was a '63 406 block that I had crossbolted and filled. It was .05 over. I had the crank magnafluxed 50 passes previous(over the winter) and it all came apart....
It was the top of second gear(about 6200 rpm) and it went BAM!! and shook REALLY hard. You see, the crank had broke into 5 pieces and the rear counterweight of crank was still hooked to flywheel/clutch and it took a moment to slow down. Suprisingly I made no mess on the track. It all stayed together for the most part. I pulled the motor and it all fell to pieces then . The crank had broke right behind the thrust bearing. Number 3-7 rods were still hooked to a piece of crank, 4-8 were hooked to a piece of crank. Mains 4 and 5 were still hanging in there saddles in block, BUT, the rear of the block had broke loose and when I pulled motor it fell off...flywheel, clutch and rear counterweight
I have a few other pictures, of mangled rods, pistons, flywheel, bellhousing......
It took me three more months to get it back together. I now run a service block 428 that I put those crossbolt caps on. So far so good I also run a Scat crank now!
Did I forget to mention the first motor cost $7000......and $5000 to replace
Ain't drag racin fun
The motor was a normally aspirated 428/.050 over with edbok heads, tunnelwedge intake with 2 600 Holleys. I don't use nitrous...I can hurt it bad enough WITHOUT that...LOL!
Yes that was a stock 35 yr old cast crank. The FT 391 cranks would work, but I did not have one at that time and basically it would have cost the same as the new cast Scat crank. There was speculation by a fellow that thought MAYBE the block actually let go FIRST(the rear broke off) which in turn broke the crankshaft. This is a possibility, but like a Tootsie POP......the world may NEVER know
Yes, I have build pictures and other shots of black car. I don't think they will let me post a bunch here? Not to "truck" oriented. I could put them in my photo gallery, but there again I don't think am I suppose to
Does someone have someplace that could host a few shots?? Then we could link here for others to see?? My homepage is a real beech to change around to put them on there. Anyone?

I would like to add something here you said you have a 352 block to start with and want to run a 428 crank. Why not go the route I am, and run a 289-302 piston? it will get you 8.5 CR and the pistons are alot lighter/cheaper than FE.
Larry, one of these days I am going to make the trip up to Ohio from VA..and look at all your Hotrods first hand..you have more toys than any man has a right too own!!
LOL!!!
I want to use the 390 block I have and use one of my 428 cranks to make a 410+ ci motor. Got the parts to run a FE. Switching to a smallblock is not in the works. Actually I was originally going to run a 10,000 rpm small block in the car. Gear it to death out back and run a high wind'n 289 . The 390 and the blower came around so I put it together. I ALWAYS wanted a blower motor, so I did it. This motor was put together the same summer I had to put a new motor for race car. That is why it's got original cast pistons and such. Nothing fancy yet...... That is why I want to take long block and put in my '67 F100 and build a nice stout shortblock and put some MORE boost to it. Right now I only run 5-6 lbs. Safe and sound.
