Windows service pack 2

Anyone install this yet? I took the advice of my hardware vendor's service dept. and had them install it when they were doing some new hardware installation. My Oh My Oh My!! I am glad they stand behide their work as SP2 totally screwed up my computer. Should get it back tomorrow after a clean wipe and reinstall of windows. Hopefully it will run.

Microsoft insists all is well on their web site and really pushes installation of this update. I would suggest that people be very wary of it.

yeah, I noticed a lot of problems...I was reading the post before this one about not installing it, then moved my computer and hooked it up again after being off for a bit, so I ran all of my updates, one of which was this service pack. My internet works sporadically at best (it's not the connection) and I cannot get to my virus scan update website.

Maybe a dumb question, but how do I remove this? Any reprecussions by doing so? I don't care what Microsoft says...they didn't buy my computer or pay my internet bill, I want this update off of my computer.

Let MS refine that service pack for a couple of months. I started installing it on a network of 14 computers and I backed out after the second one. It causes A LOT of problems with some computers, especially in the internet and network settings.
I would recommend if you really want the extra security of SP2 that you do a format and reinstall of XP, SP1, and then SP2 before you reinstall your applications.
It's about time they close up those huge security holes inherent with XP, but you will need a whole weekend to get it set up

Not a dumb question at all.
A quick system restore should do it no problem.
(Start button then help and support - it will be in there)

I have the update and have not had any problems, including withnthose applications MS stated would have problems. I did turn off everything in the new MS security center. I wouldn't be surprised that if you already have AV and a firewall and you don't turn off the new MS stuff that they will fight each other. Have you tried to turn off the new MS firewall? Might be worth a try.

It asked me about Microsoft pop-up and whether I wanted to use it as my default and I said no. My McAffee has been working flawlessly for me, especialy when I was networked on a college campus. I have the firewall, viruscan, spam and pop-up blocker...is this what the problem is. I'd rather stay with what has been working, aka McAffee, so should I still consider taking the whole thing off, or no?

I have had zero problems since installing it on my Dell, my mom has a homebuilt that I put together for her, no problems there, either. It actually seems to have cleared up a few small bugs that we both were having. Of course, as with any Microsoft product, I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop...! Now, if we could just get our ISP to get something like some reliabilty going! -TD

What I would do is just go into the security center and make sure that the firewall and everything else in there is turned off. I would try this before going back to a restore point. If this doesn't work, then go back. Just go into control panel/security center to turn things off.

I have an Asus mobo, and have read about people having problems with the asus bios and sp2. There is a new bios in beta, which is supposed to fix compatibilities, but Im waiting until the new bios gets out of beta before installing it, and sp2. My computer is way to stable to be messing with it right now.
